Having an unusual skill can be scary for a child with Asperger Syndrome. We have stopped telling our son that he is brilliant because we realized that the fact that he has always been able to spell better than his peers, and sometimes his teacher, is causing him anxiety. After all, he can see that he cannot do certain things like catch a ball, that his peers can do, so what is causing him to be able to spell so perfectly? To a 12 year old, this can be pretty scary stuff.
