THE BIBLE CODES

Researchers claim that computers have revealed a code hidden in the Bible for over three thousand years. If this code does exist, it might reveal the future of mankind.

The book, The Bible Code, written by Michael Drosnin and published in 1997 by Simon and Schuster, has fostered a great deal of discussion in literary, religious and scientific circles. In his book, Drosnin claims to have discovered a code in the letter sequences used in the first five books of the Old Testament. This theory actually originated several decades ago with Rabbi Michael Weissmandel, but was difficult to explore before the mathematical genius of computers became available.

In Cracking the Bible Code, published in October 1997, by William Morrow & Co., Jeffrey Satinover claims that references to historical events have been encoded into the Book of Genesis.

These two books are causing a lot of controversy. Some researchers believe the Code is an irrefutable truth. Religious leaders and some factions of the scientific community are not so sure. They claim it may all be a hoax, a game of Scrabble or mere hocus-pocus. Some of the believers assert that only a highly technological society could create such an intricate code. Therefore, the Bible Code is proof of the extraterrestrial origin of the Bible.

After my previous column on Nostradamus, a reader (Thanks, Brian) suggested that, as this theory originated with the Torah, or Jewish scripture, and taking into consideration the fact that Nostradamus was the son of well-to-do educated Jewish parents, it is possible that he discovered this code. If so, this could be the source of his prolific, far-reaching prophetic knowledge.

Whether Nostradamus discovered this code is uncertain, as is whether this Code actually does exist. What is certain, however, is this controversy has created a lot of attention in many arenas. These differing opinions have also generated a number of books.

In checking out the major book sellers online, I discovered as many as twenty-seven books available on this subject. Some of these books are in agreement with the Bible Code theory. Others seek to debunk the entire thing as a gigantic hoax.

There is even software available to help you decipher the
