What if, this winter, you discovered a simple way to boost your immune system so you won't get sick? What if there were ten?

The weather changes in autumn, cold temperatures set in, and runny noses and sniffles start to seem like an epidemic. Around Hallowe'en, the first snowfall combines with the sugar rush of October 31 to set most of us up for a spate of colds and flu that come and go through the winter. What if, this winter, you discovered a simple way to boost your immune system so you won't get sick? What if there were ten?

People who pick three or more of the suggestions from this list - and stick to them - will substantially improve their immune strength, increase their ability to stay sane and healthy through dreaded cold and flu season, and keep their health and happiness up through the darkest months of the year!

1. Drink your lemons. Lemon is the ideal food for restoring acid-alkali balance. Drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice in water, or adding it to tea, salad dressings (in place of vinegar), baking or cooking, helps maintain the body's internal "climate" at a pH which supports healthy bacteria instead of the viruses and harmful bacteria which thrive in more acidic environments. Apple cider vinegar is another great way to improve your body's alkalinity, but the taste of lemons is much more pleasant!

2. Give your body an herbal boost. Hundreds of herbal supplements and tinctures exist to give the immune system additional support during the winter. I recommend essential oils (especially my favourite winter blend, Thieves) as an excellent source of immune-stimulating compounds, and the rawest and most natural form of any medicinal plant, but there are other supplements which can be effective. Fresh herbs and whole food remedies are always preferable over packaged herbs or supplements, since they have a much higher potency and frequency and your body absorbs more of their value. See also Essential Oils Fight Cold and Flu.

3. Get a full night's sleep. Everybody's different: your body may need anywhere from 6 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Whatever your personal sleep requirement is, get it! Sleep has been linked to balanced hormone levels (including human growth hormone and the stress hormone, cortisol), keeping weight down, clear thinking and reasoning, improved mood, and vibrant, healthy skin.

4. Eat plenty of protein. Protein is a building block for a healthy body, mind, and immune system. Diets low in protein tend to be high in carbs which convert readily to glucose, spiking blood sugar and stressing the pancreas and the immune system.

5. Drink plenty of water. This is almost, but not quite, a given; most headaches occur because despite the number of reminders, people still aren't getting enough water! Headaches and thirst are both signs of dehydration. You should be drinking, in daily ounces, half your body weight in pounds. (i.e. Body weight in pounds, divided by 2 = number of ounces of water per day.) Click here for detailed guidelines - how much water do you need daily?

6. Stop drinking coffee. Contrary to recent marketing as a source of antioxidants, chocolate and coffee are two of the worst things you can do for your immune system and your health. Caffeine robs your body of minerals and vitamins, and it dehydrates you. If you drink coffee, make sure you add an additional two glasses to your water intake per cup of coffee. A mineral supplement helps to offset caffeine's damage, too.

7. Worse yet is the impact of refined white sugar. If you do only one thing to boost your immune system, eliminating sugar will do the trick. You will see noticeable results in your energy levels, weight distribution, immunity and your ability to think clearly when you break the cravings and stop eating refined sugar. Many holistic nutritionists consider sugar a drug for its impact on the human body; some practitioners are known to prioritize eliminating sugar from the diet over recommending that people quit smoking. Healthier sugars such as agave and stevia do exist, but avoid artificial sweeteners; they are even worse than cane sugar.

8. Stock up on raw fruits and vegetables for their antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and enzymes. The nutritional content that you receive from raw fruits and veggies is unparalleled. Many vitamins, including C, are antioxidants and will protect cells - including those of your immune system - from damage by toxins in the environment. Dark-coloured produce (berries, kale, broccoli) tends to be higher in flavonoids, polyphenols and other antioxidants. The perfect source of minerals is seaweed, which is sold dried, but can often be found raw (dried at low temperatures to maintain most of the enzymes and nutrients) in health food stores.

9. Spend some time out in the cold. Snowball fight, anyone? Exercise can make a noticeable difference to your health and happiness by releasing endorphins. Most of us spend 90% of our lives indoors, inhaling dubiously filtered air and other people's germs, so take every opportunity to get outside. Time spent outdoors in the cold also stimulates the thyroid gland.

Finally...

10. Nurture yourself. Make sure you take time to yourself, spend some time with friends, and indulge yourself in a massage, a hot bath, or an energy work session when you want one. Our bodies respond to our emotions - if you're feeling harassed and anxious, it can manifest in a sore throat or a cold. Create a space within yourself and your living environment for harmony, self-love and joy (giving thanks, prayer and blessing the abundance in your life and of the world around you helps). Pay attention to warning signs of sore throat or exhaustion so you can keep them from getting worse. Take a "mental health day" every few months to make sure your emotional needs are met. When you're happy, you're far less likely to get sick.

What a great help - thank you.
I had a series of injections that helped for ages and now my allergies are coming back.
So a natural alternative might be called for,

There is a web article on "10 Ways Aloe Vera can Improve Your Health, it at www.aloe-vera.org, that talks about how aloe vera can give the Immune System a boost.

Another important plant for the Immune System is garlic. (Crushed garlic is very potent for good health.)

All the 10 steps the author lists for better health are excellent. They should be obvious too, sad that they are not.

For me, the difficult thing is sleep. The older I get (50 now, soon to be 51) the less easily sleep comes to me. Water, too, is a difficult one for me. I love water (with fresh lemon squeezed into it), but sometimes I just forget to drink (or eat!).

I drink aloe vera each and every day. I also like to drink other organic juices for the enzymes.

Hope this helps others. - David G.

Please keep in mind that even eting fresh fruits and vegetables these days does not supply us with the vitamins, minerals and enzymes they once supplied because of food irradiation, chemical fertilizers, etc.
Our government here in the U.S. and most other nations of the world have been irradiating some of our foods increasingly from simple bacon since the mid 1950's. They say it saves the aggravation of food manufacturers lawsuits from the lessening of process contamination, but does it really work?

If you are sick, especially if you have these symptoms :
(runny nose, cough, irritated sinuses, sore throat/nasal passage, bronchitis)

a VERY good way to heal yourself is by putting about 2-3 teaspoons of bicarbonate soda into a cup, fill it with 3 quarters boiling water,

then sit down and put your mouth 3 com away from the top of the cup, then inhale the steam, i usually wrap a tea towel around the top of the cup so i can rest my head on the cup,

do this until the water cools down and is no more steam
(or use a timer for 4 minutes), then you can dilute the hot water untill its warm and gargle your throat with it. do this about 4-6 times a day untill you are fully recovered

What this does is destroy the acid/alkaling environment the virus makes for itself in your throat or nasal passsage, and maes it into a neutral PH, this make it hard for the germs to live.

i dont know about everybody, but it woks VERY well for me and leaves me re-leaved for about hour and generally speeds up healing LOTS

I do every one of these every day. I ride my bike around 12 miles a day. drink more than enough water. I take vitamins and herbal supplement as well as make my own tinctures and teas but i still cant seem to get healthy. Meditation always seems to help but my real issue is marijuana and trying to counter act its damaging effects on my body.
any other suggestions???

The article and comments are very helpful. I'm glad I found this site.
I have one question that I hope someone will be able to answer. I am a breastfeeding mom - my little on is 10 months old - and I've had 6 infections/colds in the last 5 weeks. I feel very very run down, and I am considering stopping to breastfeed (it's taxing on the body). I would prefer not to, but if I can't get my body to stop having colds/infections, I might have to.
Anyone has any suggestions for herbal remedies that are safe for breastfeeding moms? Or any other tips especially helpful for nursing moms?
Thanks.

To the breastfeeding mom, for the health of your baby, keep going! It's important for you to get healthy as well...but remember that your breastmilk is giving your baby an important tool in fighting the illnesses...If you keep getting sick, imagine how sick the baby would be without the breastmilk!
For you, there are definitely some herbs that are safe during nursing...Talk with an herbalist, or search online, at a respected site...

Hi, I am breastfeeding my daughter she will be 8 months old on the 13th. I cannot for the life of me quit drinking coffee. I have been drinking coffee since I had her pretty much, but I was sticking to the 2 cups a day rule, now that I am back to work full time, it is even harder for me to stick to that. I am now drinking sometimes a pot a day. I know this is very bad for her, but would it be better if I mixed the milk with formula, or breastmilk with no caffeine? Or should I pump and dump? Any suggestions on quitting? and decaf doesn't do it. Also What will the coffee do to her? Knowing what it does to her could probably gt me to quit.

a lott of comments asking about preventing cold sores, and i have found an read that gargling with hydrogen peroxide is a great help with this, and other ailments that may be caused by bacteria in your mouth. Careful not to swallow any though, because it is poisonous, not in the immediate death way, but in the make you sick way, which will lead you back to this site.

I think we left out spicy foods. They clear your nose and are harsh on viruses, too. Careful with the acidic content, though. Salsa is acidic, try spicing up vegetables with some cayenne pepper instead of grabbing the tortilla chips (carbs distract the immune system). Time released Vitamin C capsules are the bomb; take before bed and when you wake up.

And the dude who does marajuana, why don't you stop smoking it? Eat it dude (if you aren't strong enough to quit). So many people are tarring up their lungs with that antidepressant. Quit smoking. Don't put toxins in your lungs because you want to get high. That's what's bringing down your immune system and you know it.

I definately agree that getting enough sleep makes all the difference. That, and proper hydration. Anything that stresses the body, emotionally and/or physically, can cause strain on the immune system. So that means coffee, too harsh exercise anything that speeds you up.
and about the cold sores, preventing them is requires the same habits as staying generally healthy. if you feel one coming on, drink lots of water, take some L-Lysine pills, get some Vitamin C and RELAX!

I have had flu shot at the end of last year. I have been having flu or sore throat since beginning of this year. This is my 5th cough this year. It doesn't help that lots of people are sick in the public and the office and when they cough, they don't bother to cover their mouths and that I'm asthmatic. It would be great if just something as simple as adding lemon juice to water works.

For the people who suffer from cold sores, Rooibos tea is brilliant. My aunt used to get cold sores all the time. She started drinking the tea, didn't have a single one for ages (when she would've had several normally). She stopped drinking the tea and then pop! One appeared! Now she's back on it and cold sore free.

Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free and rich in anti-oxidents. Even those of us lucky enough not to get cold sores could benefit from the drink.

The lady who's nursing her daughter and addicted to coffee - perhaps you could dry drinking rooibos tea instead? It's advisable to cut back on the coffee slowly, but you should definitely cut back. It's not doing you or your child any good!

decaffe is definatly better! its the caffine thats a diruetic (dehydrates you) so decafe is better for you, coffe is fine, as long as you stay hydrated with it. too much caffine can leavfe you with a headache - twitchy and unable to relax or sleep. this would definatly make you feel ill - and can last for days. as for chocolate - well its better to go for dark chocolate at least 70% cocoa content -raw cocoa is high in antioxidants and can be nebificial for health but as for anything MODERATION is KEY! too much of anything can seriously damage you body. exercise regulary, drink plenty of water, eat a varied and balanced diet. stick to those last three and youll find yourself feeling better!

just getting over a very sore throat (bacterial/viral infection). for the past 4 days could'nt eat much or sleep. i usually take a well known energy drink every morning at work and i smoke (although don't drink at all).
several years ago i was prone to 4-7 colds a year as well as cold sores then i started taking vit c, zinc, garlic & cod liver oil tabs daily and now average 2 colds a year sometimes even 1! last year had the flu (1st time since '88 for me) but the virus i had recently made me realize my immune system is'nt as good as i thought. i admit i usually get no more than 6hrs sleep and usually get stressed easily. the fact that i could'nt eat or sleep very well and actually thought my throat was closing in, preventing me breathing (panicing!)made me check out facts about the immune system. thanks to ur site i know were i think i was going wrong.
i know i'll probably still get stress (in my nature!)but am now going to get more sleep, eat more friut and veg and not get THAT stressed, especially over trivial things. oh and maybe get a holiday! once again thanks for the info. very helpful.

One thing I don't see mentioned here is Beta Glucan!

Completely natural, no side effects and will not overstimulate the immune system. Beta Glucan activates the cells responsible for cleansing the body of "bad" stuff like viruses, bacteria, toxins, parasites and microbes.

For cold sores, I take an aspirin (to lower my temperature) as soon as I feel that tingle, poke it open and treat with alcohol to dry it out. Keeps it to a minimum. I used to get them often as my menstral cycle neared, that's when the basal temperature raises slightly. Or spending all day out in the hot sun could bring one on too - at least it has for me. Does this happen to anyone else?

I just began to read this article, and by tip #1, it proved itself a waste of time and a blatant display or quackery.
It recommends people eat lemons and vinegar to "improve your body's alkalinity" - which doesn't make any sense, because lemons consist of a large amount of citric acid and vinegar is actually acetic acid!
Adding an acid to anything never, ever makes it more basic!
That's just simple third grade chemistry!

To the posters for cold sores you can of course take L-Lysine but also get a prescription call acyclovir...works great.. When I feel the slightest tingle and itch I pop one in on that day and it goes away.. I too suffer with bad horrible infections. My Ear nose and throat dr mention to eat lots of yogurt. Have at least 1 a day to help with the good bacteria and get rid of bad bacteria which is a major reason for sinus infections. Each year I get sicker and sicker and yet I have no idea what keeps my immune system shot. It would be real nice to boost that baby up. On another note if you take more then the recommended dose of vitamin c all you are going to do is pee it out. HTH

What we have here is some sense mixed in with a whole lot of nonsense. First, there is no evidence that the body requires a "pH-balance" help and drinking lemon juice sure aint gonnna do it. Apple cider vinegar and lemon juice are both acidic compounds so they would actually reduce alkalinity if anything. Your advice regarding sleep and taking care of yourself is sensible but it is mixed up into a baloney of nonsense. Drinking water like crazy has no effect on the immune system, nor do any of the herbs/supplements. Smelling pretty flowers might lessen stress but if you are already eating and sleeping reasonably the effect is negligible. In you bio it says you "soak up" information but instead you should question the evidence underlying claims.Everyone should.

Regarding cold sores - I fell asleep in the sun when I was 20 years old and wound up with a severe sunburn. My entire mouth broke out in cold sores. I had to drink food through a straw. The doctor said I had sun poisoning. For years after that, I would get one cold sore after another, or even several at one time. For a couple of years I had chicken pox shots and that stopped them for a year or so and then they would come back. Finally, I learned that a lack of the proper amount of acidophilus in the stomach will cause cold sores to break out. From then on, when I first felt that ominous tingle, I would take 5-6 acidophilus tablets and one L-Lysine tablet, and an hour or so later I would repeat both. The cold sore never broke out. I haven't had a cold sore in at least 10 years. I keep both acidophilus and L-Lysine in my cabinet at all times, just in case. Our bodies produce acidophilus, but the sun, antibiotics, and stress can kill it. If I know I have to take antibiotics, I will take the pills even before I feel the tingle. If you get a lot of cold sores, it wouldn't hurt to take 5-6 acidophilus tablets and one L-Lysine tablet every day for a week or so just to get your "good" bacteria back in balance.

Somebody here wrote "ignorance is bliss". That is such an empty expression. Ignorance is not bless, and thinking is an essential part of our being human. The important bit is not to get too worried and to find happiness in life. What i would like to know is how to "check that our emotional needs are met", as the article says. How do we meet our emotional needs?
Anyway, thanks for the other points. They are all very useful.

On the post about Levaquin. I did take it and spent then next year in three drs. offices with tests ect before the warning ever came out. When it did the next time I got sick I aked for an antibiotic that wouldn't make me worse...
My question is why do Dr.s continue to give it if it is proven to cause such things.... And Levaquin isn't the only ones.
My answer would be to "why do they" is. ...That is how they make money... they can't make money off of a healthy person. If they see your smoking, drinking, ect they can always blame it on that. If they give meds with severe side effects they are sure to see you again soon. And that raises insurance expenses as well as out of pocket expenses too.. So the next time the doc writes you a script check it out completely before you take it to see if it is worth the risk. Our bodies belong to us. Not the ones making the money destroying our bodies that work for the madical fields. Dr.s are supposed to save lives. Do all you can to be healthy and make their job easier.

Hmmm...

Your first tip is contradictory.

-----> QUOTE <-----
1. Drink your lemons. Lemon is the ideal food for restoring acid-alkali balance. Drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice in water, or adding it to tea, salad dressings (in place of vinegar), baking or cooking, helps maintain the body's internal "climate" at a pH which supports healthy bacteria >>>instead of the viruses and harmful bacteria which thrive in more acidic environments.<<< Apple cider vinegar is another great way to improve your body's alkalinity, but the taste of lemons is much more pleasant!
-----> QUOTE <-----

If "viruses and harmful bacteria thrive in more acidic environments," then wouldn't consuming lemons contribute to making the pH of your body more acidic, because lemons are acidic?
Dec 2, 2009 12:51 PM
Guest :
Actually, my understanding is that though some foods go IN as an acid (everyone knows that lemons are acidic in nature), they actually metabolize as an alkaline, and increase the alkalinity in the body, rather than make it more acidic. It seems contradictory, but it actually seems true that lemons reduce your body's acidity in general.

While it may be true that no published study has confirmed the diuretic effects of caffeine, there is little doubt in my mind that every cup of my beloved coffee has a negative effect on the immune system. As much as I'd like to believe otherwise, it always agitates my colds!

Obviously, I haven't conducted a double-blind study to verify this, but as with most the advice in this article it's "common sense" to people who are aware of their own body's health.

Nature's medicine is often superior to that of peer-reviewed journals.

K, am I the only one that caught this, or what? Since when is Marijuana (see comment: December 17, 2008) an ANTIdepressant??? Correction: Supposedly is an ANTIdepressant, at very low doses. Who smokes low doses? Also, I'm quite certain that my regular smoking of high doses of marijuana (in years past) have left me suffering with Chronic bronchitis and definitely were not a ANTIdepressant -- usually passed out. Definitely stop the marijuana use before other diseases occur (can you say Cancer?).

To the poster who claimed that gargling hydrogen peroxide would help counteract the "bacteria in the mouth" causing cold sores, I think you are mistaken. Firstly, peroxide is a highly toxic substance and should only reccomended anywhere near your mouth by a licensed practitioner or dentist. Secondly, cold sores are not caused by bacteria, they are cause by the type-1 strain of the herpes virus, meaning once you contract them they remain dormant in your system. So as you are treating the symptom, not the cause, you should treat them superficially. I have had a lot of problems with coldsores, and think I have found some pretty good ways to combat them and seriously reduce their lifetime.

The first thing is to recognise the tingling and nip them in the bud; I really think this is the most important thing. As I know I am prone to them, I always stock up on Compeed patches, which are my favourite product for them. I stick them on as soon as I feel the rawness, even if I'm not 100 percent sure it's a coldsore; better safe than sorry. Compeed patches slightly aneasthetise the sore, hide it meaning you can even put lipstick or whatever on top, and really improve healing time.

However, these are expensive, and some people prefer to use Zovirax cream or similar as it is better value for money. Personally though, I find the patches work better. When applying the cream, it is really really really important to wash your hands and to concentrate the cream only on the coldsore. Once, I made the mistake of smooshing the cream all round my mouth - the result was horrendous, i spread the virus everywhere and my whole mouth broke out. This is also why I would avoid, or be very careful with moisturising lip products once the sore has blistered.

If you have no products at hand, I find gently dabbing the sore with hot water and antibacterial soap stops inflammation, don't be too rough though or you will aggravate it

A herbal remedy I found to really, really work (and I'm a bit of a herbal cynic) is a myrrh, liquorice melissa tincture that was made up for me by a herbalist at a festival. I felt the pesky swelling two days ago, had nothing to hand, washed with hot water and soap, was very careful not touch it and applied the tincture as often as possible. It dried it out, and within two days the sore is subsiding.

I'm not sure what the active ingredient is there - people often use vinegar, or even booze(my friend's dad swears by using gin!) so I'm assuming what you need is something that will gently dry it out, as they thrive in moist areas?

Basically, they crop up whenever your immune system is low, and/or when the lip is cracked, damaged, or exposed to very acidic (aka pineapple) or salty (aka crisps) foods.

So basically, if you follow the 10 steps in this article you will already be on your way to lowering your susceptibility to them, and if you get one (which, sadly, due to the eternal nature of herpes you will) then target it as quickly as possible! For me, trial and error has led me to the above solutions

This article is very informative and I have been clarified some concepts that I had, specially how to differentiate the real oil from the chemically added retailed oil. Thank you so much.
Now, in reference to the request about "....but my real issue is marijuana and trying to counter act its damaging effects on my body." This is not a matter of avoiding ilegal drugs, it takes the willingness of the individual to avoid any and all ilegal and legal drugs that in any way damages any part of the body, the brain, the liver, stomach, heart, etc., and there are many over the counter drugs with all those effects. These drugs are in Tylenol, Advil, and any cold-descongestant drug and many more.
In the case of an addiction to marijuana, it may take a professional counselor to work with you, to help you boost your willingness to reject harmful body intakes by making the choices that will best fit to a good health as God has created to be.
Marijuana is not the only evil addiction to destroy health but many others, e.g., a person told me was beeing influenced and exposed by magazines, friends, and curiosity to know and experience sexual desorders, not necessarily affecting others but himself. He wanted to heal from that evil sickness but it was very difficult for him to brake such a habit. One day, he felt that he needed to kniell down before the presence of God and ask the Lord for his forgiveness with a contrite, repented, converted heart, ready to deal with whatever the Lord will ask him to do. In tears he prayed to the Lord to heal him and read Psalm 53 (Human Wickedness) and there he is receiving the Holy Spirit flowing in his heart to become a new man. The Lord placed in his heart that he needed to fall away from those walking places of negative friends, and reject to see or read or wanting tempting items. He made a commitment to obey God's guidance and now he has no more addictions of any kind. He is free. Ask and you shall receive, says the Lord in the Holy Bible:Matthew 7 : 7 - 8 in the Bible says "Ask and it shall be given to you; seek. and you shall find; knock and it will be open to you." For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to... (read more) . Praise be the Lord now and for ever. Amen. You can click in the internet: Ask and you shall receive, says the Lord..
James 4:3 says, "You ask and do not receive because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures." If we will pray according to God's will, He will give us what we ask. I encourage you to pray asking for God's will, saying, "You give me that good and perfect gift, that which is good and right for me, even though I might not know what that is. I am asking You to give that to me." You can be sure He will do that because God, our Heavenly Father, longs to give us good gifts.

As you pray, perhaps even pray the Lord's Prayer, seeking day by day that your needs be met, and seeking forgiveness of sins. God, the Heavenly Father, longs to give you good gifts, and wants to bless your heart out of the abundance of His love. Be assured He is listening, and He wants to answer.
Luke 11:2-4
Our Father in Heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Luke 11:9-10

All I ever read from the so called experts is that 'It's not the cold weather that makes you sick it's the virus' and bla bla bla.
I tend to believe this is all a lie and that it IS the hostile and death like conditions of the frozen northern climates that contribute greatly to my many colds over the long bleak winters. I rarely get sick over spring and summer, but first sign of fall and weather plummeting I am sick all through winter. My most recent cold was certainly weather induced. I was downtown Chicago and parked my car and walked a couple miles to a restaurant for a drink and a bite to eat. It was very pleasant then around 65 degrees. On leaving the restaurant the weather had plummented to what felt like just above freezing and I had to hoof it back to my car with no coat. The next day I had a cold. So all you experts out there quit lying about how the cold has nothing to do with getitng sick. It has EVERYTHING to do with it.
There should be a number 11 on this list. MOVE SOMEWHERE WARM!

This article is very helpful and i think that everybody knows their own body and how it functions, we are all alittle different, though it is common sense that in order to be healthy we need to first focus on our Minds, then take care of ourselves like workout and eat right, and stick with it. To boost your immune system, does have Alot to do with how you think, once you get that healthy concept in your mind, then your good health will start to reveal itself. We can all be healthy but it is up to us to make it happen. We should all be healthy, happy, laugh, live and so on... and not depressed, sick, stressed and so on, we got to get healthy people, we owe it to ourselves!

Thank you. It was information I knew but for some reason hard to implement in our daily, busy lives. Now that my young children seem to catch every 'bug' that goes around; time to make some changes. Jul 4, 2010 4:58 AM

To the Guest who believes cold weather = illness. I am no more and no less sick living in Maine than I was when I lived in Texas and Southern California. My children tend to catch whatever is going around when the weather turns cold but like us, bugs hide inside where it's warm. Once the snow flies and they spend many hours outside playing, they are NEVER sick. Clean fresh air, lots of exercise and yes, that happy factor makes for a healthy body. Mental attitude has a lot to do with it. I crave warm sunshine but I've learned to embrace the cold and took up winter sports and I would be really sad to never see snow again. You've got to be happy wherever you are.

I am confused. While I thought that lemons and vinegar were very healthy, both lemons and vinegar are acidic, not alkaline... and you are saying viruses and whatnot prefer an acidic environment.... how are lemons and vinegar going to make the body more alkaline?

"Drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice in water, or adding it to tea, salad dressings (in place of vinegar), baking or cooking, helps maintain the body's internal "climate" at a pH which supports healthy bacteria instead of the viruses and harmful bacteria which thrive in more acidic environments. Apple cider vinegar is another great way to improve your body's alkalinity, but the taste of lemons is much more pleasant!"

Stop ignoring personal experience just because doctors don't understand -why- laypeople say that cold weather is linked to poor health. Yes, it is true that viruses like the warm indoors, and staying inside is what -really- transmits viruses, but is this any reason to ignore people who really get sick after being outside? Cold weather does make you sick in one way: When your body is using energy to keep iteslf warm, your immune system is weak. So dress properly.

I'm sorry but please do not fall for this advice.

I'm sure a lot of it is true, the common sense things like get enough sleep.

However, do not believe this article when it says not to drink coffee (And no, I am not the CEO of Starbucks or anything like that). Coffee has been proven to be an ABUNDANT source of minerals and antioxidants. In fact, when it comes to which one single food or beverage provides the most antioxidants, for the vast majority of Americans this is either tea or COFFEE.

Also, parts of this article are contradictory. Number 7 says "eliminate sugar from your diet". Then number 8 goes on to say "stock up on fruits". The most popular fruits that people eat (watermelon, cantelope, grapes, etc.) are actually LOADED with sugar! And yes, I know that it is "natural" sugar and I agree, having a piece of watermelon is much better for you than eating a bag of Skittles. However, even natural sugar is still processed by your body as SUGAR. If you are looking to lose weight, the advice to "snack on fruit" is one of the worst pieces of advice you can get (sugar, even natural sugar, causes weight gain).

#11 Keep warm. Many people are more fashion conscious than they are health conscious and many young women especially go around with not nearly enough on - particularly around the middle. Don't waste the vital energy your body needs to protect you from microbial invasion on keeping warm.

For all those querying the lemons business: Lemons and all other acid fruit have an alkaline effect on the body and do not create acid environments. To prevent them being harmful to the teeth, simply swill around your mouth well with plain water afterwards, preferably two or three times and NEVER brush your teeth immediately after eating anything acidic without a good swill first.

Re Water, why will that help? It keeps your insides clean as well as rehydrated and can be useful in flushing out things that might harm if they got to stick around. Very few actually drink enough pure water. Dehydration has a lot to answer for!

And no, no matter what the latest fad research says (which was almost certainly funded by vested interests), on balance coffee and chocolate are NOT good for you. Yes, they contain nutrients, but so do all living substances. There are better and safer sources of all the things coffee and chocolate are sold as 'healthy' for. Don't be fooled by wishful thinking....

Thank you so much!
I've gotten sick twice in the past month, and i guess, it has to do with my poor diet lately. It's been two years since I've gotten sick, because of my healthy eating and exercising habits.

Well my immune system is pretty much infallible, haven't been sick in a decade or so. But if doing these things will help my mental balance i'm all over it.

"TO THE POSTER WHO CANT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND WHY THEYRE ALWAYS SICK STILL.....HOW ABOUT ELIMINATE THE ILLEGAL DRUGS?? HMMM???"

Um, he DOES understand that it's his main issue...did you not read his post? If you're addicted to something, you can't just quit just like that...it's very hard and can cause very bad withdrawal symptoms (that's the #1 reason for a relapse...the belief that it has no withdrawal has been proven to be completely false). Your post will not help him one bit, because you didn't say anything that he doesn't already know, so I will.

To the person that uses marijuana: You have to quit to get better, and I know deep down you already know that...otherwise you wouldn't have said, "...but my real issue is marijuana..." If you are having trouble quitting on your own, there are a lot of treatment options available, both inpatient and outpatient. There are a lot of good ideas on the internet from people that have successfully quit, especially in message boards. Just do a Google search on "how to quit marijuana" or something like that...you'll get a bunch of great ideas and answers. It will be hard and don't beat yourself up if you have some relapses (a very large percentage of people do before they quit for good), just get back on track afterwards and stay positive. You don't have to quit cold turkey either...you can slowly wean yourself off of it using edibles. You'll have to figure out which way works best for you -- it varies from person to person. You'll feel a lot better after you quit and are past the withdrawals, and you'll have a sense of freedom and victory, as well as a lot more money in your pocket. Good luck man!

How lovely. Finally the truth and not some conspiracy bullshit to make us addicted to poisons. (coffee and sugar, so true that fake sugars are even worst!) Very helpful thank you.

Great article, im have been getting sick a little too often over the last few months, and now i think i know why, I'm eating too much of the harmful foods and not enough of the healthy ones.
Also i don't drink near enough water, not even close. I truly thought that coffee wasn't all that bad for you, but apparently it is. Thank you so much for posting this article, i will be changing my diet starting today!!

With regards to cold sores increase your zinc. I think you can safely take 25mg per day but check to be sure. The zinc prevents them by increasing your resistance.

Zinc and Vitamin C are excellent ways of building the immune system! My mom used to give me high doses of vitamin C (1-5k mg p/day) and zinc, dissolved under the tongue, at the first sign of symptoms... I had perfect attendance at school for half a decade!!! I only got the flu once, and it only lasted a couple days!! My only recommendation with the zinc is to take with food, otherwise, you'll get an upset stomach. Cold-eze is over the counter and has a small dosage of zinc, and it's coated with flavor!! It's definitely an alternative to the nasty plain zinc under the tongue! I also quit getting cold sores! I've spoken with pharmacists about the high doses (zinc between 100-300 mg p/day) as needed, and they say it's just fine since it's water soluble! My other recommendation is the Zand's liquid Goldenseal/Echinacea! You'll never have more than slight symptoms if you take it right away. Don't take golden seal if you're pregnant though. This is my strategy for me and now my two children! Hope it works for you too!!!

Great resource! Definitely eliminate the sugar and caffeine as a starting point. Lemon water does wonders! I use it and apple cider vinegar when I don't have lemons at home. The body needs to remain alkaline in order to stay healthy.

I came here looking for something for my cousin who was just diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid. My mom says it is covering her body. The pic I saw when I Googled broke my heart. If anyone has heard of it and has any suggestions, PLEASE post a message.

Victoria, since this is moderated, PLEASE email me if there is a response that might help my cousin. teeninchee@hotmail.com with the subject help for cousin or bullous pemphigoid so I will recognize it! Thank you so much.

I do have a recommendation for the person who needs info for cold sores....try taking oregano oil and olive leaf extract. There is a lot of information available about their effectiveness for every known virus.

Essential oil cinnamon, combination "Thieves" diffused in the air have been reported to keep those cold/flu bugs at bay, and that to work for me. The blend "RC" does wonders for my crew for sniffles/colds even congestion related to asthma.

Goldenseal, myrrh with cayenne pepper (capsules) by Dr. Christopher-- we used during a flu outbreak in the 80s when I worked in the shipyard. A lot of the employees were out with the flu and we needed three key individuals to keep working because ships were coming in to drydock. Two of the guys were feeling sick but still came to work. I gave each of them 6 capsules with the instructions take two now, then take the other 4 (by 2s) four and eight hours later. Two hours after taking the first two, one of the guys stopped by my office to say, "I don't know if it's psychological or what, but I actually feel better." Neither of us missed work that flu season.

Umeboshi plum paste or balls are excellent for restoring the alkaline balance in the system.

These are things I have not just tried. I use them whenever necessary with 100% success.

Good health to all.
