The second annual Korea Foodstuff Fair, arranged by the Asia Pacific Foodstuff Trade Corporation (AFT), is comprised of numerous authentic food flown-in directly from Korea. The fair began at City Square Mall on July 13th, where one of the largest bowls of bibimbap was prepared with enough rice and vegetables for 100 servings. A performance of this dish preparation will also be at the Chinatown Point Mall location on July 24th at 4:30pm.
Authentic Korean Food
Korean food enthusiasts will particularly enjoy the fair where tasty rice wine (9% alcohol), mushrooms, aged black garlic, dry soybean paste, grain syrup, handmade rice noodles, rice cakes, melons, various teas, ready-to-eat meals like bibimbap, juicy grapes, seaweed, and kimchi are available for sale. Kimchi, a popular Korean dish, is a tasty recipe that includes cabbage and spices. All of the items listed above will allow Singaporeans, and any visitor, to create various types of Korean dishes directly in their own kitchen.
Many samples of the different products for sale are available for visitors to taste. People were seen hopping from table to table to satisfy their palate. To one westerner, the tea had a consistency of jam or preserves that can be spread onto a slice of bread if one wishes. Otherwise, a person just needs to add hot or cold water to make a delicious cup of tea.
Last September's fair, that promoted Korean food products in Singapore, was a hit with more than 5,000 visitors at Chinatown Point and resulted in the sale of 90% of the products available. “Interest in Korean food has been growing in Singapore, alongside an appreciation of Korean culture and entertainment. With this fair, we want to bring authentic food direct from the manufacturers to Singaporean fans,” stated Mr Kevin Lee, President of AFT, in a July 9, 2010 press release by the company. AFT works in collaboration with Human Rice Food Co., Ltd to export some of the products to Singapore and beyond.
