No traditional holiday meal or Sunday dinner is complete without gravy. There are several types of gravy that can be incorporated into any meal.

The key to making savory gravies is meat drippings. Meat drippings is simply the meat juices that can be drained from the meat’s roasting pan. Drippings are what flavor the gravy.

Another type of gravy is the dessert gravy. Dessert gravies are very similar to cream gravies, except that they are sweet instead of savory.

Brown Gravy Recipe

Brown gravy is a traditional gravy that is served on mashed potatoes, meats and more. It is very simple to make and its flavors will match the type of meat being served because it is made from the juices of the meat.

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 cups meat broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Add the meat drippings to the pan.
  2. While mixing the drippings, add the flour.
  3. Add the broth by pouring it in slowly and continuously mixing.
  4. Keep mixing the brown gravy until it is thickened.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste.

An alternative to brown gravy is cream gravy. This type of gravy is popular in the Southern cooking and is often served over biscuits, but it is also good on mashed potatoes.

Chocolate Gravy Recipe

Chocolate Gravy is dessert gravy that can be poured over biscuits, rolls or pastries. It can also be used as pie filling or filling for puff pastries. This gravy can be made into a vanilla gravy by substituting the cocoa for an extra tablespoon of vanilla.

Ingredients:

  • Sauce pan
  • 1 cup white sugar (artificial sweetener can be used instead)
  • 3 tsps. butter
  • 1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. flour
  • 1 1/4 cups milk

Directions:

  1. Melt the butter on low heat while stirring it slowly.
  2. While stirring the butter, slowly add the flour and the cocoa. This will make a paste.
  3. After the paste is made, slowly add the milk while mixing it into the paste.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients, making sure to mix while each ingredient is added.
  5. Cook the mixture until it is the consistency of pudding. Make sure to mix the chocolate gravy while it cooks to prevent scorching.

With these three recipes, there will be a gravy for every occasion this holiday season.
