Soon, Freddy Krueger will be introduced to a whole new gneration. The production company behind the new rendition of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Platinum Dunes, is no stranger to horror film remakes. They also produced remakes of Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Amityville Horror.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010: The Storyline
The 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has the same plot as the original story. Hideously disfigured Freddy Krueger stalks a group of teenagers in Springwood, Ohio, gaining access to them through their dreams. As long as they stay awake, the teenagers are safe, but no one can stay awake forever.
The moment they close their eyes, they find themselves matching wits with Freddy Krueger, who is able to kill people in their sleep. The story shifts between the dream world and the real world until it is difficult to tell whether what is happening is real or not until Freddie, brandishing his garden gloves with their razor-sharp claws, suddenly appears.
Who was Freddy Krueger?
In life, Freddy Krueger was a child killer called "The Springwood Slasher." Freed on a technicality, the outraged parents of Springwood, Ohio, took justice into their own hands by setting him on fire.
Freddie died that night, but his soul continues to take revengeon those who killed him. Since he has the power to enter drems, and operates by stalking the children of his killers as soon as they fall asleep, twisting their dreams into bizarre nightmares and causing their deaths.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010: The Cast
His face burned and scarred, sporting a jaunty fedora, striped sweater and razor-clawed gloves as his trademark, the role of Freddy Krueger was made famous by Robert Englund. For many fans, his name and Freddy Krueger's are synonymous.
This time, the role of Krueger will be not be played by Englund. Jackie Earle Haley will assume the role of Freddy. According to a ComicCon interview, Englund will not make a cameo appearance in the film, as was rumored. However, Englund reportedly finds the casting choice of Haley favorable, and supports the remake.
Haley, an Oscar-nominated American actor, who got his start as Kelly Leak in The Bad News Bears, has most recently appeared in the 2009 films Shutter Island and Watchmen: The End is Nigh. The remake is reportedly going for the chills, playing it scary and serious, without the wise come-backs which became a staple of Freddy's character in later films in the series. There are also rumors that Freddie will have a slightly new look this time around.
Rooney Mara will be playing Nancy Thompson, a role played by Heather Langenkamp in the original film. Kyle Gillman will play the role of Quentin. Other actors include Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, and Kellan Lutz.
The Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise
A recent article at Yahoo! Movies lists the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise as one of the top five highest-grossing horror franchises. It ranks #4, toped only byFriday the 13th, Saw, and Halloween.
The original A Nightmare in Elm Street was released in 1984. Englund played Freddy eight times in the original and a series of sequels produced by New Line Cinema. . In the last film, Freddie battled Jason from the Friday the 13th series.

This time, New Line Cinema has partnered with Platinum Dunes for a reboot of the series. According to an IGN interview, the original director, Wes Craven, is upset over the remake. The new A Nightmare on Elm Street, will have the same MPAA "R" rating as the original, for strong bloody horror and language.
