The Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club presents the Aaron Leaney Quartet on November 4 and 5, 2010. The show will feature classic jazz music by John Coltrane, such as Impressions and Chim Chim Cheree, as well as Coltrane’s monumental work, A Love Supreme.
Aaron Leaney, Saxophonist and Composer
Aaron Leaney is a multi-instrumentalist (saxophone/clarinet) who earned his Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Studies with honours at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario. In Toronto, Aaron Leaney studied with Brian Dickinson, Kelly Jefferson, Pat LaBarbera, Kirk MacDonald and Don Thompson.
Since graduating, Leaney has performed throughout Canada, from Calgary to Toronto. Earlier this year, when the 2010 Calgary Jazz Festival collapsed, Leaney forged ahead, performing in the Calgary “Improvised” Jazz Festival.
In 2006, Leaney released his first CD, Duo, with Chris Dadge (drums). His follow-up CD is Aaron Leaney Three, which was released in 2008. The album features Thom Golub (bass) and Chris Dadge (drums). The group performs Leaney's compositions which span from experimental music and to alternative rock. Lately, Leaney has been experimenting with electronic effects, pushing the boundaries of the traditional jazz setting.
The Music of John Coltrane Featured at the Beat Niq
The Aaron Leaney Quartet will perform a tribute to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane. This American jazz great lived from 1926 – 1967. The John Coltrane Quartet, which included McCoy Tyner (piano), Elvin Jones (drums) and Jimmy Garrison (bass) has been recognized for producing hit albums My Favorite Things, Africa Brass, Impressions and Giant Steps.
Coltrane’s music remains popular to this day. He was posthumously awarded a Grammy for Best Jazz Solo Performance for his album Bye Bye Blackbird and in 1997, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.
Hi music has been referenced in the movies Jerry McGuire and The Last Graduation. His melodies have been used in popular TV shows such as NYPD Blue and ER. In 1999, Universal Studios named a street on its lot in John Coltrane’s name to recognize his influence on cinema.
In 1972, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified his album A Love Supreme gold in Japan. It later became certified gold in the United States in 2001.
About the Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club
According to Fast Forward Weekly Magazine, The Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club is considered to be “the city’s best live jazz and blues venue.” Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, The BeatNiq is located in the basement of Piq Niq, a Parisienne bistro.
The Beat Niq presents live jazz music year-round, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The club features a wide array of jazz artists, from The Rubim de Toledo Jazz Bossa Band to Run Stop Run. It is a popular venue for CD release parties for local jazz musicians.
The Aaron Leaney Quartet is comprised of Aaron Leaney (tenor saxophone), Stephen Fletcher (piano), Simon Fisk (bass) and Robin Tufts (drums). The group will perform classic John Coltrane on November 4 and 5, 2010 at the Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club in Calgary, Alberta. Doors open at 8:00 P.M. All shows begin at 9:00 P.M. There will be a cover charge at the door.
