A mass protest against the monetisation of basic needs is being held in Wall Street, NYC. Adbusters and Anonymous warn that they will be there for weeks.

On September 17th 2011, protestors gathered in Wall Street, New York City, for a demonstration which is set to last for weeks. Activists Adbusters raised the call, in July 2011, in a bid to have '20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months.' It is being described as America's 'Tahrir Square moment.' Hacktivists Anonymous are amongst the demonstrators joining together, in the financial heart of the USA, in a rally against profit over people.

The One Demand of Protestors in the Occupy Wall Street Campaign

Demonstrators are angry about the influence that corporations and wealthy lobbyists have over the democratic process in the USA. They are calling upon President Barack Obama to create a Presidential Commission 'tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington.' Tired of policies perceived as putting profit over the basic needs of the American people, Occupy Wall Street was conceived as a way to communicate this to the highest levels of government.

Amongst the campaign sites is We Are the 99 Percent, which highlights some of the concerns of demonstrators. They include the monetisation of healthcare, with the poorest people unable to afford essential medication and treatment; soaring unemployment, seen as being a result of a recession caused and perpetuated by bankers; homelessness through mis-sold mortgages and the inability to pay rents; and environmental pollution at the hands of industry. The 99% refers to the Americans who purportedly share only 1% of the country's wealth.

This comes in a week when the US Census Bureau released figures showing that poverty amongst Americans is at a seventeen year high.

Who are Involved in the Occupy Wall Street Campaign?

While Adbusters sounded the call for action, several other organisations and ordinary people answered it. Amongst the more celebrated protestors are hacktivists Anonymous, who have promised a physical presence under the banner #OccupyWallStreet.

However, they are not alone. The NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage are two of the pressure groups angry at the observed corruption of politics by wealthy corporate lobbyists. New Yorkers Against Budget Cuts are railing against the acceleration of defence spending, while there are domestic issues. Their website exclaims, 'One cruise missile could pay 10 teacher’s salaries for a year!' Before raising their slogan, 'We need jobs, health care and education! Not continued budget cuts, prisons and war.'

They are just some of the organised groups joining the protest, in Wall Street, New York City, on September 17th 2011. Others are simply individuals who agree with the basic tenets of the day, without being affiliated with any particular cause.

Please dig a bit deeper on this, from Day of Rage website:
http://www.usdayofrage.org/pub...

Why?
Wall Street is a huge contributor to the political machine, which in turns enables Wall Street’s corporate plunder of our nation. Both the Democratic and Republican parties set the bankster agenda because of the MONEY. When we at US Day of Rage speak of ‘taking the MONEY out of politics’, we have no choice but to focus on the sources of the MONEY.

Bought by hard and soft dollars, disloyal, incompetent, and wasteful interests have usurped our nation’s civil and military power, spawning a host of threats to liberty and national security.

As Americans we may bang our head on other matters, but on this we surely agree. In a democracy: progressives; unions; conservatives; tea party; and unaffiliated Americans can govern and work things out. In a kleptocracy, controlled by the banksters, we cannot. We must stop their influence, their motives, and their tricks, from continuing to destroy our democratic republic, and together we can do it.

US Day of Rage (usdayofrage.org) demands that money be removed from the buying of politicians who feed the Wall Street beast. We demand that the resources of our nation no longer be used to coddle and benefit banksters and their minions. We demand that the US Government diligently reign in the parasitic destruction wreaked by Wall Street. We demand that our nation no longer be held hostage to ‘too big to fail’ banks. We demand that solutions be found that stop the Federal Reserve from stealing our future.

The American Revolution is alive and well. It’s a group of non-violent citizen nobodies who believe in the radical notion that Americans have a right to freedom of speech and the right to peaceable assembly, in deed the right to engage in politics through free and fair elections unsullied by disloyal, incompetent, and wasteful special interests that are destroying our democratic republic and preying on the resources and spirits of citizens.

This problem begins at the top, Obama passes 500million to a failing enterprise and one of the principles of said failing enterprise is a major contributor BO's re-election campaign, Ron Emanuel, BO's chief of staff, possibly selling the vacant Chicago seat and then getting elected mayor. Chicago politics is the farm league for the Washington Majors. I agree that the republicans are just as guilty but this problem goes all the way to the top. BO the man who touted transparency and change. We got 0 of each in fact it's gotten worse.

Ah Joe Harrington, author of an important work glorifying Wicca and Wiccans, now this is important stuff. Religion has no value but tree hugging women pretending they can cast spells that's valid. Yet another. Is George Soros and HON. Wiccan?

The article is on the mark. The fact is that America has always been an oligarchy, which of course is not a good thing if you are not one of the club. Furthermore, the mass media presents no opposition to the crimes of Washington and there are no longer any liberals as an opposition party to create debate. As Gore Vidal said, there is only one party in America, the Democratic right and the Republican right. The mass media continually provides misinformation. For instance, when they look at the distribution of the budget they include SS and Medicare. But these program are paid for and not part of the general revenue stream. Since the National Security Council put this country on a war budget some 90% of revenue goes through the Pentagon. The U.S. is a rogue terrorist state.

Fantastic ! You have every ones attention. NOW I BEG YOU START AT THE TOP. The overall solution, LIMIT CONGRESSIONAL TERMS, Same term limits as the PRESIDENT.
MOST OF OUR LEGISLATORS ARE - LOBBYFODDER- We must be able to vote. PLEASE ! A REFERENDUM TO LIMIT CONGRESSIONAL TERMS. It was tried once, I believe in 95. One guess who voted it down. Franklin Roosevelt wanted a 4th term, congress made sure that would never happen. Yet they hold office for ten, twenty, thirty or forty years.and become dictators and LOBBYFODDER. Thank you, please keep up the GOOD FIGHT. YOU HAVE THE POWER.I am a proud AMERICAN . Some one has to listen, I want my country back. I was born during depression. Make your appeal to the right people. June C. Clark-- E Mail - tillietaco@optonline.net

June - Thank you for your views on this matter. I had no idea that members of Congress were able to sit for so long and influence policy in such a way.

I walk by Zuccotti Park (where the so-called protesters have been corralled) and, frankly, they could learn a lot about protests from the really courageous protesters in Egypt. You can't change the country while looking like a sad little hipster with a pitiable, hand-drawn cardboard sign. Regime change take throwing yourself on the barricades and storming the castles, torches and pitchforks in hand. The cops--including gangs of white-shirted brass who see this as easy overtime--are laughing at you while they defend the same people who are making sure those same cops don't have a pension or health benefits when they get old.

Guest - With respect, are you not confusing protest with outright revolution? My understanding is that the Occupy Wall Street protesters want their voice to be heard. This is patently successful if it's prompting me to write about them and you to stop by to leave comments about it. They have repeatedly said that this is a peaceful demonstration, which rules out the use of pitchforks and torches. As a Briton, I know only too well from recent events here, how protests can turn into ineffective riots, as soon as violence is involved. I'm inclined to support the Occupy Wall Street strategy here.
