Lakey Peterson's win at Supergirl Pro Junior locks in her third consecutive ASP Pro Junior title, and her second consecutive North America Pro Junior title.

On August 13, 2011, the 4th annual Supergirl Pro Junior surf contest went down in Oceanside, CA, with 16 of the best age 20-and-under surfers competing in the only Association of Surfing Professionals ( ASP) 6-star event pro junior contest in North America. Lakey Peterson, only one week after winning the US Open of Surfing Pro Junior title, claimed victory at Supergirl, snagging the win in two to four foot waves at Oceanside Pier. The ASP Junior Pro is her third consecutive title and secures her a slot in the ASP World Junior Tour, where she will have the opportunity to compete against the world's best under-21 surfers at the upcoming ASP World Junior Tour which begins in Bali.

Peterson Rode the Waves to a Big Supergirl Win

Peterson started strong in the finals with a 6.33 and a 7.67, then came out with a 7.87 to edge out Malia Manuel and take over first place, and hold onto it for the win. Peterson proudly wore her pink Supergirl cape after her win, a great finish for a perfect season. She said, "It's such a great contest. I want to thank ASA and Warner Bros. for putting on such a great, well-run event. It's a nice way to end the year by winning the only 6-Star Junior contest."

4. Nagé Melamed 6.96 points

Supergirl Pro Junior Surf Finals

In the finals, Peterson, who rides regular-footed, took to her backhand and ended up ahead the entire heat. She was able to take advantage of a lefthander down the beach, banging out a 15.54 out of a possible 20 points for her heat total in the finals to win. Peterson shared the podium with Malia Manuel and Leila Hurst. Manuel went out strong in her first run and was responsible for the event’s highest heat total of 16.94 in the quarterfinals, but she couldn't overtake Peterson in the final and finished second. Melamed came into the competition as a rookie wild card and in her baptism of fire in the Supergirl Pro, ended up taking a very respectable fourth, just behind the veterans of Supergirl that got spots on the podium.

“There were some fun waves throughout the day,” Peterson said. “I went down south and surfed the left and it was way better than anything else that was coming in.” Peterson’s win at the ASP 6-Star event caps off a sweep in the 2011 ASP North America Pro Junior Series: she won the Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior and the Nike US Open of Surfing before shredding the Supergirl Pro Junior to take the top spot in the women’s regional rankings.

Supergirl Sports Series

The Supergirl Pro Junior is the first event in the 2011 Supergirl Jam, the action sports industry's only large-scale, all-female competition and lifestyle event series. Designed to promote female empowerment and independence, the series is a major showcase for female athletes. It goes out big for the year on August 21, 2011, at the Supergirl Jam, where the top female athletes in skateboarding and snowboarding will compete in Venice Beach.

The press release from ASA Entertainment, which helps produce the event, says that the event begins at noon and features a Snowboard Rail Jam with a 28-foot tall man-made mountain of 80,000 pounds of REAL snow packed and ready for the ladies to bring their winter slope style to the beach! The Supergirl skateboard jam will feature both pro and amateur street competitions with the world's top female skaters on a custom-built course. For the first time in Supergirl Jam history, the Am-Jam contest will be hosted on the pro course and the top amateurs will advance to get a shot at competing alongside the pros.

The Supergirl Jam series will be broadcast nationally in October on FOX Sports Net (FSN) and FUEL TV. For more detailed information on the Supergirl Jam event or the television programming please visit the Supergirl site.
