BAFTA Announces 2011 Film Awards Nominations

Hot on the heels of the Golden Globes, BAFTA announced the nominees for its 2011 movie awards. 'The King's Speech' took the lead with 14 nominations.

Two days after the winners of the 68th Golden Globes were announced in Los Angeles, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) revealed its nominations in London on January 18, 2011. The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, garnered 14 nominations, with Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, following closely behind with nominations in 12 categories.

The nominations were announced at a press conference at BAFTA’s headquarters in Piccadilly by British actors Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia, An Education) and Talulah Riley (Pride and Prejudice).

The winners will be announced at London’s Royal Opera House on February 13, 2011.

'The King’s Speech' Leads the Way with 14 BAFTA Nominations

Fresh from the Golden Globes, where it was nominated in seven categories, although only won Best Actor for Colin Firth, The King's Speech continues to ride high. The movie received 14 BAFTA nominations, including Best Film, Costume Design, Original Music and Original Screenplay. Tom Hooper was nominated for Director and Colin Firth received another Leading Actor nomination. Co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush are up for Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor.

Black Swan received 12 nominations, among which were Best Film, Original Screenplay, Special Visual Effects and Director for Darren Aronofsky. Natalie Portman, who took home the Best Actress Golden Globe, has another chance at winning with a BAFTA Leading Actress nomination. Barbara Hershey was nominated for Supporting Actress.

Inception, the psychological thriller starring Leonardo di Caprio, has nine nominations, including Best Film, Special Visual Effects and Director for Christopher Nolan.

True Grit, the latest movie from the Coen brothers, and Danny Boyle's 127 Hours were both nominated eight times, although the latter missed out on the Best Film category. It was, however, nominated for Outstanding British Film. The movie's star, James Franco, is also nominated for Leading Actor.

The Social Network, which swept the board at the Golden Globes, winning four of the six awards for which it was nominated, has six BAFTA nominations.

BAFTA Recognition for British Films

The BAFTAs pay particular attention to home-grown productions in its Outstanding British Film category. Alongside 127 Hours, the nominees are The King’s Speech, Another Year, Made in Dagenham and Four Lions.

BAFTA Rising Star Award

Also to be announced at the ceremony is the winner of the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award. It is the only BAFTA category voted for by the public. The nominees are Gemma Arterton (Tamara Drewe), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Tom Hardy (Inception), Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy) and Emma Stone (Easy A).
