What is the difference between Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman, and the Yeti? Not much, according to reports. They are all thought to be large primates, however there are some differences and different names of the popular ape-man cryptids known by the monikers above.
All of these animals are popular cryptic creatures of legend (others being creatures like the Mothman) because there have been reports of sightings throughout history, but the creature is unaccepted by biology, placing it into the field of cryptozoology because of its unconfirmed and unidentified status. Following are descriptions of the four ape-man cryptids.
Bigfoot – One of the Most Popular Ape-Man Cryptids
Bigfoot is a term used to describe this mythical creatures in much of America and Canada. Bigfoot reportedly has large feet, evidenced by footprints, and he is between 6 to 10 feet tall, brown or shaggy, and ape-like.
Bigfoot is bipedal, and has mostly been reported in the American Northwest, although accounts of the creature have come from almost all parts of the United States and Canada. Bigfoot sightings in America are regularly reported.
The Cryptid Called Sasquatch
Sasquatch is another name for Bigfoot, which derives from one of the many names given to the creature by indigenous populations in the American Northwest and Western Canada. A
ll historic accounts of Sasquatch, passed down in legendary tales that have been maintained independently in different tribal communities (meaning that different peoples had similar accounts of the same, or same type, of creature in different places) have provided insight as to the history of sightings of the ape-man.
What is the Abominable Snowman Cryptid?
The Abominable Snowman differs from Bigfoot and Sasquatch in color and habitat, according to reports. Black and brown creatures dubbed Bigfoot and Sasquatch are primarily reported in forested areas. The Abominable Snowman, which dwells in much higher altitudes in some areas of the Himalayas in Nepal, Tibet, China, and India, is said to have white fur.
In 1951, a British explorer by the name of Eric Shipton reported that he had stumbled upon the footprint of this creature, and he photographed the print, next to an ice pick, provided for scale. The name "Abominable Snowman" was coined by Charles Howard-Bury after a trip to the Himalayas in 1921, during which he claimed to have found prints.
The Cryptid Creature Known as the Yeti
"Yeti" is a derivation from a Tibetan word used to describe the Abominable Snowman. Historically, most reports of the creature have come from the local people who inhabit high altitude communities in or near the Himalayan Mountains.
Historically accepted as an actual being by these people, British and American explorers in the early 20th century were surprised to learn that there were many native terms for the creature. Notably, the British and American explorers had thought they were the first to discover the Yeti after they encountered its footprints.
Although there are reported differences between Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman, and Yeti, all of these creatures are supposed to be large, bipedal primates that have so far been quite elusive and solitary.
