hair smooth after keratin treatment without flat i - andersen
The curly-haired girls' quest for smooth, shiny, straight hair has added a treatment to its choice of products. The hair smoothing procedure goes under various names.

Whether it is called Brazilian keratin treatment, Coppola keratin straightening, Keratin Complex treatment, Liquid keratin, and Global keratin, etc., the primary product used in this conditioning treatment is keratin. Keratin is a tough protein found in skin, hair and, nails. The chemical aldehyde, a derivative of formaldehyde, assists the keratin infusion into the hair.

Keratin Treatment versus Japanese Straightening Treatment

Unlike the thermal reconditioning system (Japanese straightening) which thermally and chemically restructures the hair bonds to create permanent stick straight hair, the keratin procedures recondition the hair preventing frizz while allowing it to wave, curl, or be flat ironed straight. Hair gradually returns to its original state without the awkward growing out stage inherent to the Japanese hair straightening. This advantage becomes its disadvantage; the treatment is not permanent and lasts anywhere from 8 weeks to 4 months.

The Hair Undergoes a Conditioning Treatment

Essentially the protein keratin formula is infused into freshly washed hair by heat. The internal hair bond is unchanged, the cuticle is smoothed and hair damage is repaired. The internal structure of the hair is not changed but the hair is believed to be stronger, more flexible and manageable post treatment.

The Application of Keratin Hair Treatment

Hair is thoroughly washed of any product with a special salt-free clarifying shampoo. Hair is blown 100% dry with hair dryer and brush then sectioned with the solution applied thoroughly to every strand. Each strand section is then straightened up to 5 times with a 450-degree flat iron thus infusing the keratin solution into the hair. The hair remains so for 72 hours. Thereafter, it is washed with a sodium-free shampoo and conditioner. Results are frizz free, soft, shiny hair ready for styling or air-drying.

Safety Concerns of Smoothing Reconditioning Keratin Treatment

Eyes may burn and throats ache when the solution is applied or heated. Some stylists find they need to wear a mask for comfort and protection.

The long-term effects of breathing in toxins are not known nor are the long-term effects of repeated treatments to hair. Despite what manufacturers claim this is a chemical product being applied to the hair and scalp.

The downside of BKT (Brazilian Keratin Treatment)

  • Although the product is not expensive by the times it passes through the seller to the stylist and onto the client’s hair, the treatment costs anywhere from $250 - $500. The average price is $300.

  • The treatment may take 1.5 to 5 hours of time depending on length and thickness of hair.

  • The success is very technician dependent as well as the efficacy of the flat iron and the number of times it is applied to the hair strands.

  • Three to 4 days of not washing product out of the hair can be extremely uncomfortable, not to add unattractive. During that time, the hair cannot get wet or be put up or pinned or bent in any way. If so, it must be flat ironed smooth again.
  • There is a shorter quicker version where the hair can be washed out after 6 hours. It may not be as effective.

  • Hair must be washed and conditioned with special shampoos and conditioners, which do not contain sulfate or sodium. The scalp and hair sometimes does not feel as clean as it did with the previous shampoo of choice.

  • Some claim their double processed blond hair is slightly darker post treatment (hair can be colored 2 weeks after the procedure).

  • The more frequently the hair is washed, the quicker the results disappear.

The Upside of keratin smoothing procedures

  • It can be done on virtually any hair type.

  • Ironically chemically damaged hair with its open shafts takes the product better than virgin hair. Bleached, previously straightened, highlighted, virgin, or colored hair are all candidates. Caucasian, African, or Asian hair can be processed. Hair will feel, look, and be smoother, softer, and shinier.

  • The treatment is a moisturizer and believed to repair damaged hair.

  • Heat and humidity wont cause hair to frizz.

  • The hair retains its body and doesn’t hang limp.

  • Hair will eventually return to its pretreatment state.

I Love the Brazilian keratin hair treatment. My Hair is so soft and shiny most of Frizz free. It only takes me half the time to style. I would recommend this to anyone who it thinking about doing this. I Had this done at Bravo Salon in Scottsdale az 480-951-8076. I love Bravo Salon. They are my new best friends after recommending the Brazilian hair keratin treatment. It did take 4 days before I could shampoo my hair and I was afraid to shampoo it because I love it so much.

Hi - I got this done last week and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It's great to just let my hair airdry in the summer without having to stand there with a blowdryer =P I get these really nice soft waves and I have ZERO frizz and it just feels so much lighter and softer. I'm not sure how long it will really last but all I know is that there's no way I'm going back to the way my hair was before! :)

I just got this done yesterday and haven't washed my hair yet. Right now it's very very straight, silky and soft. My hair is usually pretty course and frizzy and now it has an entirely different texture to it. It's been incredibly humid out and I have not seen the slightest bit of frizz. I'm excited to wash it and see how it air dries!

Got this done last Friday, washed it out yesterday and I absolutely LOVE IT!! I can't believe how soft and silky my hair is. Before I had long, dull, middle-aged, frizzy, corkscrew curls and now I have soft, shiny, waves. One of my guy friends said I looked 10 years younger!! I had it done at the same time as base-color and highlights so it took over 4 hours, and the whole lot cost almost $500, but boy was it worth it. I won't be going back to my old hair..ever! I was worried that I would have to spend time fixing it every morning, but I gave it about 5 minutes with the hair dryer (no brush) yesterday and it looks great...just falls into place. I work out 1-2 times a day plus I have about 20 hot flashes a day, so my scalp sweats a lot and after 2 days of this, I have absolutely NO FRIZZ at all. Genius is an understatement...its revolutionary!!

I had it done a month ago. My hair was still curly but better then before. I went back to the salon and it was done again. I like it. My hair is less curlier then before but I can leave it airdry. I don't look like a witch. It cost me $200 but the shampoo and conditioner that cost $70. Can I buy this at the store? I am happy.

I had this done 4 days ago and I totally love it. I let it air dry today and although not totally straight what an incredible difference. Even waiting the four days to wash it out wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I just hope it lasts the four months!

I got it done less than a month ago and was so excited because of the amount of time my curly frizzy hair takes to style! Its back to how it was, i called my salon and im going in tomorrow to get it fixed for free, they are redoing it but other than that it was amazing when it lasts! Make sure you can get a guarantee of some sort to make sure you spend all this money just to loose out in a month!

Got it done a few days ago and absolutely love it!!! What a difference! My hair is so smooth and looks healthy. I would recommend this to anyone. I live in Florida and this is going to cut my blow drying time substantially and I won't have to worry about the "FRIZZ"!

I recently used a keratin treatment from Sunliss. The only thing I can say is that my hair looks fabulous, everybody at the office has noticed my change! I cant believe how smooth and silky my hair looks. I had it done by my mother in law (she is a stylist) and now she is offering only this brand of brazilian keratin treatments in her salon.

Cheers,

To the person trying to find a place that does Brazilian straightening in SAN DIEGO, Mary Jane Salon in Hillcrest is the only place I know of so far, because last time I was there they told me all about it. They don't have someone on staff who does it, they schedule with a woman who will come in to do it for their clients for about $250. According to them, she is the only person in San Diego who does it, and she is known around the world for her expertise. You do have to call several weeks in advance so they can get ahold of her to see what works for her schedule.

Aside from the Brazilian Hair Straightening, Mary Jane is a FANTASTIC salon... I went there for cut and highlights a few months ago and they were SO nice and did such a great job! I had three different people do my cut, color, and style, all while I sipped a Mimosa and looked out the french doors overlooking 4th Street. A very great experience! Check them out on Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/biz/maryjane-salon-san-diego). Great reviews and they almost always have an awesome coupon on there!!

Good luck, and please email me if you find anyone else in San Diego who does this! Thanks!

Just got the treatment done in a salon in Wisconsin. I was all excited to see it after I washed it and was disappointed. My hair look about 60% better but not fully satisfied. Underneath my top layers of hair is still wavy underneath. So I am going back to salon next week to try again. Not looking forward to 72hrs not washing hair again, expecially around x-mas time. I wish it just worked wonderfully for me but not the case.

Just got this done today and I can say that I love it already! I've had other thermal reconditioning and it is expensive, and take a long time to grow out. This only took two hours and looks and feels great already. I am in So. Calif. and had it done at Ulta, they are having a special for $185, so worth it plus their hair dressers are all trained in it. For that price you can't go wrong!

For the lady that spent $70.00 on the Shampoo. you could use avenoo shampoo its awsome, you could buy it in walgreens or any pharmacy. It works great for this type of treatment done to the hair. I had mine done about 3 months ago and its the best. his treatment actually makes your hair grow even faster. For those who have just got this done, you will see how fast your hair will grow. I recommend this to anyone that has curly freezy hair.

Got the treatment done 2 days ago. My hair feels silky and is very straight, like the Japanese Straightening I did over 6 months ago. I won't ever do that as it changes your hair structure, and you have to cut it out. this process took much less time, 2 hours, and was much gentler. There was no noticeable odor, and the gentleman who did it said its therapeutic to him to work with the product and your hair. Can't wait to see the results after washing it. Can only use no sulfates and no sodium shampoos and conditioners. This part is important if you want your treatment to last long.

To those who live in San Diego, I had it done last week at the Haircut Store on Lake Murray and I totally love it, my hair has always had frizz and it is gorgeous now....love it!!! And my hair is bleached and looked like crap and was falling out, one hair in my brush this morning YEA!!!!

I first got the Keratin shot in September of 2009 and then Dec 2009. I love it! Even up to yesterday some friends said to me that my hair looked really beautiful (had a wash and blow-out on Sat). Co-workers, friends, and family members all love my hair because it's so shiny and soft- mind you, I last colored in Dec 2008 and had highlights in May 2009. My ends are healthy. I use the Keratin shot shampoo and it's great. It smells lovely too.

This treatement is AMAZING!! I had it done 5 months ago and it still is controlling the frizz and I shampoo my hair everyday. At first my hair was pin straight and did not need to be blown out other than for styling purposes. Now, if I let it air dry it is wavy but frizz free. The shine and softness is totally amazing and my hair has never looked healthier! All I can say is DO IT! It's worth every penny and then some!!!

Just had my hair redone after 12 weeks. My hair grows extremely fast and I wanted to stay ahead of myself (as the roots were bent). I LOVE this system. I only wash my hair once a week with WEN (and had been using it previously). I have grey, colored hair that is kinky, wild and course. Once done I have not to use any product except for hair oil as my ends still tend to be dry and course (but not unmanageable). If you can stand the smell for 3 days, it is sooooo worth it. The 1st time I had it done it rained for 5 days so I had to be careful to give it a quick once over when I came in so the keratin bonds were not broken. I will continue to do this again and again. I only paid $150 so shop around for a decent price.

I had this done on Saturday and today I will be washing my hair. My hairdresser guarantees that I will be completely satisfied by the results. I paid around $500.00 for the treatment, the special shampoo and conditoner - which is a little pricey in my opnion, but here in Miami good hair treatments are expensive. I went to Aruj Spa at Macy's Dadeland. If anyone knows a less expensive place, please let me know.

I am planning on getting the Global Keratin treatment in about 6 months when I have more growth due to currently having short hair. has anyone had the Global Keratin treatment that has ethnic har? I am hoping that the treatment looks better than simply blowdrying and flat ironing because with ethnic hair, you can still tell that the hair is naturally curly. I'd love it to be VERY straight.

We have used this in our salon twice and 6 out of 6 stylists had one or more of these symptoms: headache, stomach ache/nausea, eye irritation and/or sore throat and lung sensitivity. The product worked wonderfully yet we are not sure the end results are worth the possible health risks. The 4% was used. Has anyone else had this issue?

I am a woman of color and to any of you who have questions about this product I will tell you that it really does work. I have very thick hair and this product worked very well. Your hair will be softer and very straight. The product created manageability that I really needed. I am satisfied with the product and will continue to use this system.

With all the great reviews on this hair treatment, I was almost convinced to get it done over the weekend. That is until I came across articles that says it's dangerous for you. This treatment is banned in Brazil due to an alleged death of a woman from the product. CBS also reported that the chemicals used contains formaldehyde (embalming fluid) which can cause cancer. Here's the report: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=3414419n&tag=related;photovideo.

On day 2, my hair is soft, silky and looks great...it was basically dry and damaged before I started the process. I will follow up after I wash it in a few days.

Had hair done on April 20...not pleased at all. I have shoulder length hair...still basically takes me the same amount of time to blow dry. If it is not completely dry, it frizzes/curls up the next day. I am now back to using the flat iron...so basically I am very disappointed. has anyone really had improved drying/frizz reduction. If was great after I left the salson but have not been able to duplicate it since then...waste of a lot of $$ :(

I'm an expat that had this treatment done at my salon in the Philippines. My very, very naturally curly hair was frizzing like crazy and this treatment worked like MAGIC -- now my hair has soft, gorgeous waves that I can flatten to straight with 10 minutes with a flat iron. I highly recommend it if you're struggling with frizz & live in a humid climate!

I'm getting this done next week, a day before I have a major active weekend... The stylist told me the first 2 days my hair will look great, then it's the thrid that it starts to look like crap (for lack of washing it...). So my question is, should I go ahead and do this, or wait for another time when I have no plans? By active I mean I'm going salsa dancing all weekend! Thanks!

I have really thick curly hair and got this done a month and a half ago. When it was first done, my hair was pin straight and even after a week of washing it, remained so. But by the second week, it started to become more voluminous, which I liked more than the previous week. By week 3, it started to wave a bit and a month and a half later, my curls are staring to reappear. I paid $400 for the treatment and although my hair is still shiny and smooth, the texture was supposed to remain straight or close to it for at least 4-6 months. I dont' think I'd spend that much money on this again but if you have wavy hair, it would probably work out perfectly for you!

i had my hair chemically straightened a few years ago. I loved it until my hair started to grow. Than the roots were curly and I had to straighten it anyway. My hair grows fast so it happened quickly and than I had to cut off my straightened hair or do the roots to maintain. I would not do this again for many reason. I've learned to embrace my curls and make better use of my hair straightener.

:-( I just got this treatment done and was extremely disappointed. As soon as I got in the first shower, it washed right out. All of my curls came right back, texture did not change much, etc. I went back to the salon and they told me it is not supposed to straighten the hair, just add softness and shine. Yet everywhere I read it describes it as a temporary straightening procedure and the softness and shine aren't enough to justify $300 and 4 days of careful showering. So frankly I think this is an overhyped blow out. $300 to get the same results from a blowdryer for $40? I'll stick to blowouts.

hi girls,
my name is eli,i'm a professional hair dresser i live in fort lauderdale and i use my own formula(FDA APPROVAL) on my customers and they L-O-V-E it so much, i use to work with most of the biggest honored brands in the market but then i decided to make my own brand after long research (a year) finally i made it and iv'e been using it for few months in my salon and the results are great not to mention the big smile and the excitement of my customers afterwards.
lately i came up with a revolutionary idea....ready?---"do it yourself kit" which contain the keratin bottle, clarify shampoo and conditioner and a C'D with instructions attached showing you all steps a-z how to do it(very simple and inexpensive).
it will be published very soon, currently sell in my salon only.

i want to use the brazilian straightener on my hair because i think it is much cheaper to just buy it. i don't want to go through the whole treatment, but i do want my hair to last 2-4 months (which is exactly what the straightener is supposed to do, so why not just buy it and do it myself, right?) i really don't want to pay $300 for a treatment at the salon.

Well, all I can say is that it's brilliant ksilk keratin. My hair has stayed smooth, silky and shiney and I've had so many complimentary comments. It's the best thing I've ever done to my hair and I love it! After I had it done, it poured with rain everyday and it was also windy, but my hair stayed frizz-free. Normally I would have had a nervous breakdown trying to cope with the frizz!

Not sure how long it will last, but I will definitely continue to have it done. I might need the fringe doing in between, but I will wait and see.

Hope these comments are helpful.

Thanks for transforming my hair and my life.read more at www.ksilkkeratin.com

i had my hair chemically straightened like 2 years ago and i didn't like it as it made the regrowth really curly and the ends were stick straight and had lots of split ends, i wasn't allowed to do anything to it for a month including tying it in a bun or pinning my fringe back and now after 2 years i still have like 4 inches of the chemically straightened hair and if i cut it then my hair would be really short and frizzy, so i want to know if there's any salon in darwin, australia where i can get my hair done, and the kind of keratin treatment w/o the formaldehyde, if anyone knows please email me at vil64_enriquez@yahoo.com
also, if it harmed 6 out of 6 stylists what about the clients? since i had my hair straightened i have this weird skin condition that's only in my chest and back area, which was where my hair always touched, so anyway i want to make sure if this product is completely safe thanks

I had this done last week and washed it on Sunday - it didnt come back bone straight but had volume when I blow dried it - It a lot more manageable but dont expect to go from really curly hair to bone straight after your first wash. When I sweat my underneath hair goes back to a wave. If it gets any wavier, will go back to the salon to get it re-done - keep you posted!

had it done last week, would not do it again, yes my hair takes very little time to style now, however the price is just not worth it and the results are already fading : (
it looks fab for the first week, just wish it lasted longer, i cannot afford to pay this much for such a short period of time and the shampoo they want you to buy costs $25 for a small bottle! more if u want the conditioner and serum
it will make your hair less frizzy though, so if you have the money go for it, otherwise get protein treatments done ($20) every week, that will improve your hair a lot

(CBS) Women are raving about a new hair-straightening process from Brazil that works and, by all accounts, works well, for up to four months.
But Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT) uses formaldehyde, a chemical known to cause cancer.
On The Early Show Friday, Dr. Ellen Marmur, a dermatologist at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center, raised red flags about the potential health risks of BKT.
It's grown rapidly in popularity in the United States over the last six months.
It promises shiny, voluminous, straight hair -- even on colored or damaged hair -- for three to four months. The procedure, which costs between $150 and $800 or more, is available at salons across the country.
BKT claims to use keratin, a type of protein, rather than chemicals to naturally smooth out and straighten hair.
But experts say that's doubtful, and it's really the formaldehyde that makes the treatment work.
Formaldehyde is considered a carcinogen by a number of health and safety agencies.
Apparently, noxious fumes are released when it's applied, posing potential risks to the customer, the person applying it, and even others in the vicinity, Marmur says, adding that it's not just the risk from the actual application of the treatment, but from what happens in the months following it, when the chemical breaks down, that worries her.
There haven't been any conclusive studies about BKT, but experts are concerned about the possible inhalation or absorption of the formaldehyde in it.

It is horrible! It is akin to using embalmment on live people! The smell is suffocating and it irritates your eyes, airways and scalp. I believe it can provoke a severe asthma attack in a predisposed person. Some people experience severe hair loss following the treatment. I am surprised it is not illegal. More so, it is highly advertised. I know it is a huge money maker and big money shut a lot of mouths... But customers, please be aware that you will be wasting your big money while poisoning yourself and potentially your family too. No matter how good the hair would look (if it does) it is not worth it getting a cadaver treatment!

Ed Hunn at Le Cirque Salon in New Orleans (on General deGaulle next to Rouse's Supermarket) did a Brazilian Blowout on my hair in mid-September, 2010. I was the first person he did after he took the class and he did an amazing job. I only wash my hair once or twice a week so it's still looking good, though I can see where it's beginning to wear out but it has been almost 4 months now. I have long hair and it took Ed 3 hours to do it. The cost was $300 but well worth it. It's an amazing process, as my hair frizzed even indoors when it was humid outside. My hair is now soft, smooth, silky and frizz and the drying time is about 10 minutes at most, versus the 30 minutes it took me before. I have only used my flat iron ONCE since I got this procedure done so my hair is in much better condition. Will be going back in a month to get another treatment and was told it works even better and lasts a bit longer the second time. Go for it -- you won't regret it!

I had a Brazilian Keratin Treatment done at C'zar Salon and Spa in Bolingbrook, IL....Lindsey Fox did my service and my hair is awesome!!! My hair has a natural wave but is constantly color treated and flat ironed. So needless to say my hair is damaged. This treatment has taken away all of my frizz and what appeared to be damage. The only complaint is leaving it in my hair for four days. My hair felt gross but when you looked at it you couldn't tell, thank god. My scalp also got itchy, I can only assume that is because my scalp was dirty. After I was able to wash it, it was absolutely wonderful! Blow dry time is cut in half and I no longer have to flat iron. I love it!

I had it done three weeks ago. I like it but don't love it because after I blow dry it it is poofy. So the only way I can get it straightened, is have it hot ironed every week at a salon. It is costing me more money than I expected. I have not tried to let it air dry but you can tell when I wash it that the curls are still there. I was told I have a strong curl pattern. Oh well, maybe my hair just won't take. I am glad everyone else had a good experience with it.

I have had it done twice. The first time it lasted 9 months (although there was a slight regrowth wave near the scalp. I am 6 months into my second treatment and am worried that because of health concerns the product will be banned and I won't be able to get it done again.

I have it it done twice and my hair went from naturally curly to naturally wavy…I love it..I can watching my hair and do it myself in half the time. The difficult part is the health concern…My 1st one was done in DC and it was HARD TO BREATHE…I thought I was going to die between the breathing and burning eyes…the 2nd one I got done in North Carolina and it wasn't half as bad. I smelled very little product and it took half the time. So I am not sure if it depends on how the person does it or if the product has improved without formaldehyde. I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't want to go to the hair salon often or a person that just loves the natural FRIZZ free, wavy, or easy to blow dry and flat iron hair. Just consider th danger and take precautions.

I just had the keratin treatment done yesterday and I'm just so happy with the results. I have never received so many compliment In one day. My hair is extremely thick and it took 4 hours in the salon but it was so worth it. I leave in Orlando and normally my hair would get frizzy as soon as I was out the door. I went to salon dominicano in Orlando and I'm so pleased. I have been relaxing my hair since a child and have never achieved such great results. It just does not compare. I will never relax my hair again and I will continue to do the keratin treatment again and again. It is great when you feel beautiful. I recommend it to anyone that has thick coarse hair.

I will say i was very afraid to get my hair done like this becuase of what i heard on the net. I deceided to get mine done anyways If I hated it it would wear off as I am told. I decided to go to this girl friend recceomended her website I have provded below . Her name is Sharre

http://braziliankeratin.shutterfly.com/

She uses QOD products which are Legal here in Canada. On My hair she used QOD max white In which she said I could wash my hair in 6 hours. I have never been so happy in my entire life. My hair is super Managable The frizz ball Is not more. My hair is silky and bueatiful and she gave me volume so my hair did not stick to my head and look limp. She gave me awesome maintence tips. I would reccommend this to anyone who wants to make their life a bit easier but finally ruling their unruly hair.

Not being able to wash or tie my hair up for 72 hours was a big problem for me. I live in Florida. I was able to remedy the problem by brushing all my hair straight back and used a 4 inch wide, cloth headband. Otherwise I don't know if I could have dealth with it. I did not end up with any creases or unwanted bends in my hair. I will never go back to using a mild relaxer. This treatment left my hair in much, much better condition. Love it!!

I'm a big fan of the Keratin straightener system, but I prefer genuine Brazilian products as the use of Formaldehyde is banned there and the products are a lot safer to use.

Plenty of places to buyy online, just look out for the name Escova Progressiva, which is what the Brazilians call Brazilian Blowout.

I had my Brazilian done in Durban, South africa about a month ago. I just love it! For the first time in my life, I can have long, soft, feminine hair and not just a big bush! Durban is exstremely humid, but my hair just stays put!

Here in Brazil we're moving away from Kertain treatments in favour of the new cysteine based hair straighteners which are coming out.
They produce a more natural effect, but don't last wuite as long.

That said, I've tried one made by a company called Tutanat and loved the results. I may even use it again, but I'm still gauging how long the results last.
But three weeks in and I'm very happy.

I don't like this kind of straightening because the chemical damage the hair a lot. I prefer the flat iron or the hair dryer to straighten my hair and now there are some hair tools that cause less damage to the hair, I use one of these, it's the Karmin G3 Salon Pro and it leaves my hair soft, straight and healthy.

I love pin straight hair but I don't like chemicals, are too damaging for hair. I prefer straihten my hair with the Karmin Professional Titanium, it works pretty good, removes static and leaves my hair silky and shiny, and it's less damaging than chemical treatments.
