Hollywood can be an expensive place for visitors to the Los Angeles area, but these tips will help save money without sacrificing on the fun.

Glitz and glamor in Hollywood, California, can come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, it’s possible to vacation here without going broke or staying in cheap dive hotels. Try the following tips and suggestions when planning any visit to the movie capital of America.

Where to Stay in Hollywood

Right behind the huge Hollywood & Highland complex is a side street that houses one of Hollywood’s best lodging deals, the Hollywood Orchid Suites (1753 Orchid Ave; 323-874-9678). Rates are easily a third of that of the Renaissance right next door, and rates include a kitchen (save on food), free wi-fi, free gated parking and a location within walking distance of most of Hollywood’s major attractions.

There are also several hostels in the Hollywood area. Try Banana Bungalow Hollywood (5920 Hollywood Blvd.; 877-977-5077), USA Hostels Hollywood (1624 Schrader Boulevard; 323-462-3777) and Orange Drive Manor (1764 N. Orange Dr; 323-850-0350). All three offer dorm room accommodations for $25 per person or less on average, with private rooms available at some for $50 or less.

Where to Dine for Less in Hollywood

The options for cheap eats run the gamut in Hollywood from fast food to chain restaurants to 24-hour diners. There are also many chic eateries and even a weekend Farmer’s Market to help reign in the food budget.

Even some of the more expensive restaurants offer discounts for mid-week dining or happy hours with discounts on appetizers as well as drinks.

Some of the best choices for eating for less in Hollywood, CA, can be found in the Suite101 article “Cheap Eats in Hollywood California.”

Cheap Things to Do in Hollywood

Many of the most iconic attractions in Hollywood are free to visit or view. Among these are the Hollywood Walk of Fame and, of course, the Hollywood sign, which can be seen from most major intersections, as well as the Hollywood and Highland Center. Details on these and other no cost attractions can be found in the Suite101 article “5 Free Things to Do in Hollywood California.”

Hollywood nightlife can be expensive, with many celebrity-favored nightclubs, but there are still plenty of options for $20 or less per person. There are several clubs to catch live bands or comedy, movie theaters that show everything from art films to the latest blockbusters, and plenty of places to shop. For some great suggestions, read the Suite101 article “Budget Adult Nightlife in Hollywood California.”

Getting to Hollywood

Most travelers who visit Hollywood arrive via one of Los Angeles’ many airports. LAX handles the majority of international flights, but Burbank is actually a bit closer and is serviced within the U.S. by many discount carriers.

Public transportation options are plentiful in L.A., and it’s relatively easy to get to Hollywood from most areas in town. The best of these options is the Metro rail system, as Hollywood Blvd. sits on the Red Line and is serviced by two stations at the intersections with Highland Ave and Vine Ave.

Amtrak arrivals to the city should just go downstairs and get on the Red Line Metro. Greyhound arrivals should take the #60 bus across the street from the station to the nearest Red Line Metro station. Airport arrivals can either take a shuttle directly to Hollywood or catch a Flyaway shuttle to Union Station where one can catch the Red Line Metro.
