Canwest Global Communications Corp. and Hot Docs – North America's largest documentary film festival – have come together to announce the new recipients of more than $250,000 in grants and loans. Twelve Canadian documentary filmmakers will be awarded completion grants and development loans through the Canwest-Hot Docs Completion Fund and the Canwest-Hot Docs Development Fund.
Recipients of the 2010 Canwest-Hot Docs Completion Fund
The following projects have been awarded grants totaling $182,000:
- Ron Hynes – Man of a Thousand Songs. Produced by Terry Greenlaw and Jordan Canning and directed by William D. MacGillivray, Ron Hynes – Man of a Thousand Songs takes a look at Newfoundland singer-songwriter Ron Hynes (The Wonderful Grand Band.)
- At Night, They Dance. Produced by Lucie Lambert and directed by Stéphane Thibault and Isabelle Lavigne, At Night, They Dance follows a family of belly dancers in a working-class district of Cairo.
- Beauty Day. Produced by Michael McMahon, Kevin McMahon, and Kristina McLaughlin and directed by Jay Cheel, Beauty Day takes a look at cable television star Ralph Zavadil, a.k.a. St. Catherine's Cap'n Video.
- Family Portrait in Black and White. Produced by Boris Ivanov and directed by Julia Ivanova (Moscow Freestyle,) Family Portrait in Black and White follows Olga Nenya as she raises a large family of black children in predominantly white Ukraine.
- Recessionize! For Fun and Profit! Produced and directed by Jamie Kastner, this film takes a look at the various creative ways people find to deal with life in harsh economic times.
- Cuda. Produced and directed by Jeremy Torrie (Resurrection,) Cuda documents a Canadian soldier’s homage to his deceased platoon buddy.
Recipients of the 2010 Canwest-Hot Docs Development Fund
The following projects have been awarded no-interest loans totaling $69,000:
- A History of Battle Fatigue.Produced by Michael McMahon, Kristina McLaughlin, and Alan Zweig and directed by Alan Zweig, A History of Battle Fatigue takes a look at post-traumatic stress disorder.
- The Art of Affliction.Produced by Mary Barroll, The Art of Affliction explores the connections between art and illness.
- Lost Highway.Produced and directed by Derreck Roemer and Neil Graham, Lost Highway documents the lives of people living on Ontario’s once prosperous Highway 7.
- Rise Up.Produced by Deborah Parks and directed by Shelley Saywell (In the Name of the Family,) Rise Up follows Lorraine Segato (Parachute Club) as she attempts to organize a concert featuring homeless performers.
- Painting by Number$. Produced by Jeannette Loakman and directed by Brenda Kovrig, Painting by Number$ explores the world of corporate art
- Slumdog Millionaires. Produced by Ed Barreveld and directed by Rama Rau, Slumdog Millionaires takes a look at the real millionaires of Mumbai's Dharavi slum.
About the Canwest-Hot Docs Documentary Funds
The Canwest-Hot Docs Documentary Funds consist of a $3-million completion fund and a $1-million development fund aiming to provide Canadian filmmakers with financial support and the means necessary to complete their documentary film projects. Including those chosen this year, 55 film projects have received completion grants and no-interest loans from the Canwest-Hot Docs Documentary Funds since it was established in April 2008, for a total of $1,369,000.
