States such as Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland and Massachusetts, will begin offering cash for clunker appliance rebate programs for people who purchase new appliances. Only certain appliances are covered in the rebate program and they vary by state.
Iowa Appliance Rebates
Iowa's cash for appliance clunker rebate system will be mail-in. The residents are encouraged to purchase new Energy Star appliances to replace older models that may be less efficient. The Iowa program will begin in March 2010.
Eligible products in Iowa include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Room air conditioners
- Gas storage water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Natural gas furnaces
- Propane furnaces
- Gas boilers
- Central air conditioners
The rebate amounts will vary based on efficiency levels and physical size of the product. Participating residents are required to certify the new product will replace a clunker product and the clunker was disposed of properly.
Iowa has received a total funding of $2,881,000.
Kentucky Appliance Rebates
Kentucky will implementation of the cash for clunker appliances rebate program will utilize a mail-in system. Rebates will begin in April 2010 and continue until funding runs out.
Eligible products in Kentucky include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Room air conditioners
- Gas condensing water heaters
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Solar water heaters (electric and gas back-up)
- Gas Furnaces
- Gas Boilers
- Central air conditioners
- Air source heat pumps
- Geothermal heat pumps
Participating residents must "self-certify" the new appliance replaces a clunker. Kentucky does not require proof but does encourage consumers to recycle their clunker appliances.
Kentucky has received a total funding of $4,096,000.
Louisiana Appliance Rebates
Louisiana will implement a mail-in rebate program for the cash for clunker appliances. The Louisiana program will begin in April 2010 and continue until February 2012 unless funds run out before that date.
Eligible products in Louisiana include:
- Refrigerators

- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Room air conditioners
- Gas condensing water heaters
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Solar water heaters (electric and gas back-up)

- Central air conditioners
- Air source heat pumps
Residents who wish to participate in the rebate program must reserve their rebates online or by phone. The rebate recipients must certify the clunker appliance was disposed of in accordance with Louisiana state law.
Louisiana has received a total funding of $4,232,000.
Maine Appliance Rebates
Maine will use a mail-in rebate program to help consumers purchase new Energy Star efficient appliances to replace their old ones. The start date for the Maine program is February 2010 and continue until funds are depleted.
Eligible products in Maine include:
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Oil furnaces
- Gas furnaces
- Oil boilers
- Gas boilers
- Central air conditioners
- Air source heat pumps
Maine requires residents to provide proof that the clunker appliance was hauled away for disposal.
Maine has received a total funding of $1,263,000.
Maryland Appliance Rebates
Maryland will use a mail-in rebate program to help consumers purchase new Energy Star efficient appliances to replace their old ones. The start date for the Maryland program is March 2010 and continue until funds are depleted.
Eligible products in Maryland include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washers
- Heat pump water heaters
Rebates are required to be reserved in advance by Maryland residents who do not live in an area covered by a participating utility company. Maryland does not require proof of recycling but does encourage consumers to recycle their clunker appliances.
Maryland has received a total funding of $5,405,000.
Massachusetts Appliance Rebates
Massachusetts will implement a mail-in rebate program to help consumers purchase new Energy Star efficient appliances to replace their old ones. The start date for the Massachusetts program is March 2010 and continue until April if funds remain available.
Eligible products in Massachusetts include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
Refrigerators and freezers must be purchased from participating retailers. The retailers will recycle the clunker appliance and provide proof of recycling to the consumer. The consumer will submit this proof to the state in order to claim the rebate. All other clunker appliances must be recycled in accordance with state law.
Massachusetts has received a total funding of $6,235,000.
