On a Canadian tour Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's pit bull Junior was refused entry to Ontario and his methods were criticized in Vancouver. There's more.

As dog trainer and TV star Cesar Millan finished up a Canadian tour he was the subject of controversy on three fronts. His pit bull Junior was refused entry into the Canadian province of Ontario, a story in the Vancouver Sun criticized his methods and he was sued by a former employee in L.A..

This all happened under the backdrop of a Canadian tour. The star of The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel was in the midst of a 14 show, 11 city tour over 17 days in November of 2010 at the time. His final two shows were in Saskatoon on Saturday November 13 and Winnipeg the following night. Those dates were added after the tour had been announced by request of dogs lovers in those cities.

Pit Bull Junior Banned

There is a pit bull ban in Ontario that was put in place in 2005 due to many incidents in that province of pit bulls harming humans. In late October and early November of 2010 when Millan's show went to Toronto, Hamilton, London and Ottawa, Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley would not allow Junior to enter the province to play the shows.

Millan was informed of that back in August of 2010 and was prepared not to include Junior in the Ontario shows. There are no such bans in the other provinces Millan played in. Members of the opposition NDP party in Ontario criticized the government of being inflexible and tried to get Junior into the province but the government proved that they have as much bite as they do bark.

“We have a piece of legislation and it applies to all,” Bentley said about the ban at the time. “We don’t amend it on the fly. We respect the law and we expect the law applies equally to all.” Millan said that it's humans, not the dogs, at fault for attacks and that banning a breed creates misunderstanding and fear.

Vancouver Sun Writer Criticizes Cesar Millan

In a story in the Vancouver Sun on November 9, 2010 writer Kim Pemberton wrote about a controversy that's ongoing, chiefly that some other dog trainers - and dog owners - feel Millan's methods are outdated and criticize his handling of dogs. Pemberton was critical of Millan but did not give a full picture.

"The anti-Millan folks also have the backing of the American Humane Society, which condemned Millan's training methods as "inhumane, outdated and improper" and called on the National Geographic Channel to pull the plug on his show," Pemberton wrote. "Yes, Millan is charismatic, charming and funny but that doesn't mean the core message he gives about being the dominant leader of the pack and using force to instill that fact is correct."

The writer praised Tamar Geller, Larry King's dog trainer who appeared on King's show at that time. Geller had talked about how if a dog went to the bathroom in the house rubbing its nose in it would only cause more problems, and Pemberton agreed. The implication was that Millan would rub the dog's nose in it but Millan would not and would likely blame the behavior on the owner. Millan does not hit dogs or punish them in any way.

TMZ Says Cesar Millan Being Sued by Former Employee

At that time TMZ broke a story being picked up by other media that claims the former executive director of the Cesar and Illusion Millan Foundation, Sean Hawkins, was suing Millan and his company for unspecified damages. Hawkins says that he was fired by the company after returning from a month away where he was being treated for alcoholism.

TMZ said Hawkins filed his suit in L.A. Superior Country Court. Hawkins reportedly claims that he had gone for treatment for his illness in June and reported back to work a month later, sober and having completed his treatment. A that time his employer demoted him, he says, then fired him when he said he needed time to think about accepting the demotion. Hawkins claims he'd been given permission to go to treatment.

The 2010 Canadian tour was successful with sold-out venues and strong reviews.

people who think his methods are wrong and outdated are not mentally sane. He never hurts a dog. Instead he brings them peace and balance and teaches their owners how to have a happy balanced relationship with their dog. Take a look at his dogs, and take a look at people who oppose him's dogs. Who's are better behaved? exactly...

How stupid people can be !! So is Millan's fault and responsability the addictions of that drunk??? Yeah how many of us can get drunk turning in to an alcoholic and not loose or job?! I wouldn't hire him back with the same position either. He will have to work his way up to get back the trust for a higher position. Is not like he actually got a disease like cancer or maternety leave, you know, justyfiable conditions. Naming addictions as diseases its just making all this irresponsable junkies able to suck money from goverment (our taxes) all kinds of agencies and now employers. Wow! I guess the message is "Go head, get drunk or high, you will recover later and someone else will pay"

I have watched many episodes of Dog Whisperer. I have never seen Ceasar abusive or punish a dog cruelly. These people speaking out against him are likely jealous of his fame and success. "inhumane, outdated and improper"- more like 'kind, revolutionary, gets results'. He even exchanges dogs that don't work well in the homes he visits.

It is the humans' faults that their dogs are misbehaved. I've seen this in action at the dog park countless times. People who have no control or respect from their dog(s) are the trouble makers.

I'm a huge Ceasar fan, so I may come across as biased, but I'm usually fair minded as well. I just can't see where these people are coming from when they criticize his methods. He understands the nature of dogs and works with them and their owners to achieve peace and balance.

I have watched nearly every episode of the dog whisperer and not once have I ever seen cesar millan hit, punish or mistreat a dog. He did a show on potty training a dog and said never be cross with a dog if they make a mess in the house just clean it up and spray it. I don't know where this person got the info that he would rub a dogs nose in its own urine from but I can assure you I have never seen him do anything remotely like that, maybe the anti cesar people are just jealous of his abilities and success.

Wherever there is someone doing something good in the world, there's always those men, sitting in their boardroom in the higher echelons of society, wanting to propose their control over it. The Canadian government need to pull their consumerist, narrow-minded, social conformist heads out of their ass and realize they're the problem. "Yes, let's instill fear into the people, make them fear pit bulls and all animals biologically built to survive and defend themselves. And how do we do it?? We place them in the media as aggressive, dangerous, volatile, and everything else people should believe we are protecting them from... that way they see us as the good guy, not the controlling, powerful conglomerates that feed off the rest of society doing the hard yards."

Okay, I'd say that Cesar Millan is so well known and it naturally attracts some negativity perhaps out of jealousy. I wouldn't know why this negativity is directed at him if not for just this guess.
I am not a fan or anything like that.
I have two dogs living with five cats and all animals are just fine. Dogs know their place and as happy as a canines can be!!! Humans, feline, canine love each other to bits and we live in harmony.
But I say that Cesar Millan perhaps is the only sane person in relation how to treat dogs properly and ready to share his gift of vast knowledge.
Does he take any business from dog trainers or such - no, I don't think so. His services are unique and can only help and contribute to others. So, why these attacks on this man?
So many humans just humanize their dogs, pamper them, spoil them and corrupt their nature, which is so wrong!!! Want a placid pet - get a cat or a bird or so!
As for alcoholics or recovering ones - sorry, what does it have to do with anything?!!!
I just felt to write this, when I saw all these links whilst searching for something else!
Yes, I watch almost all episodes of 'Dog Whisperer' and just nod my head as I watch it.
Me - I respect this man for his help to others and his great ability to share his knowledge.

California is an "at will" employment state. Unless you have a contract, you can be fire for being Ugly, fat, thin. Both sides can terminate the agreement at-will for any reason. It may not be morally correct but you can discriminate. Employers get shafted far to often by angry employees.

J-E-A-L-O-U-S-Y rears it's "lousy" head again! It's the age old story of sore losers who don't like it when they are confronted with change and having to question their beliefs.Challenged with the ideology that animals respond to more than anger, force and aggression-and- with the knowledge that Cesar's Way is better, therefore threatening their livelihood these people try to discredit Cesar Milan. The proof is in the pudding! doq-owners know the truth, and we stand behind, and beside Cesar Milan and his Whispering!! It is because of Cesar Milan and his abilities to teach us, that I am able to walk my German Pointer(I couldn't before Cesar's insights) and I am able to relate to other dogs. My kids no longer walk in fear when we walk our Picasso. Thank you Cesar! our hat's off to you...

I think it sucks....the PitBull ban is beyond his control and he honoured it, he dosent use abusive ways to train dogs, and this article has no examples of anytime he did, so clearly that much fluff...like the Larry King dog trainer saying dont rub a dogs nose it pee.....Cesar Millan dosent advocate that....more fluff...and finally the lawsuit isnt about dogs...its about a drunk who is upset he got fired...just because he went to treatment dosent mean he was civil or able to meet work expectations...dosent even mean he stopped drinking...the fluff to finish. Utter crap this article....do your homework..and stop trying to get published by printing shit...

There will always be something someone will disagree with no matter who it is they are watching or reading. Any intelligent person has to decide what is for them and what is not as I do. Although I try things from other trainers, hitting is never encouraged by Milan. Dogs are dogs and they are animals who think like animals. I have been watching the show all season and when I heard that DirecTV was taking away National Geographic from their subscribers I was flabbergasted. I for one wouldn’t stand for it and although my DISH Network employee account assures me I’ll have FOX channels for years to come I bet DirecTV customers would like the same peace of mind. If I were in that situation I would switch ASAP so I don’t miss my favorite shows.

I try to be objective about this criticism regarding him, but the truth is, at the end of the day, dogs are animals. These are the two main topics critics bring up about him: 1. His methods are outdated and/or false and not scientifically proven. 2. He uses abusive approaches. While topic 1 is arguable, I think as human-centered people can be, they tend to make things complicated, making everything based on studies, credentials, etc. and getting strayed from the way nature is. To be fair, I don't say they're not credible, but I'd like to see them SHARE THEIR methods while not bashing Cesar at the same time. For 2, people overreact and think Cesar's simple taps on the dogs are already kicks. To be truly fair, I've never seen him hurt a dog, and at the same time Cesar has been open to other training methods to improve himself.
