There are cheap London hotels and they don't need to be budget hostels or a long way from the city centre. Good accommodation can be found for £100 a night or less.

In some cases visitors can find cheap hotels in London for much less than £100 a night, even in high season. Here are just a few examples, in Hoxton, Shepherd's Bush, and even in the center of London in Covent Garden and Bloomsbury.

The Edward Lear Hotel

28/30 Seymour Street, London W1H 7JB

Tel: 020 7402 5401

Yes, the famous artist and writer Edward Lear lived here, just a few yards from Marble Arch, Oxford Street and Hyde Park. It's a modest but very pleasant hotel, and although not all rooms are ensuite guests can book an ensuite room for less than £100 a night – which is a bargain given its very central London location.

The Hoxton Hotel

81 Great Eastern Street, London EC2A 3HU

Tel: 020 7550 1000

Just a few hundred yards from lively Hoxton Square with its hip bars and galleries, the equally hip Hoxton Hotel is also close to Old Street tube station and only half a mile or so from Liverpool Street rail station and London's financial district. The Hoxton is boutique on the cheap, with rooms available from £59 upwards, and sometimes with special offers from £29. The hotel also has regular sales of rooms for £1, in the same way budget airlines work. Register online.

K West Hotel and Spa

Richmond Way, London W14 0AX

Tel: 020 8008 6600

West of the centre in Shepherd's Bush, a short walk from Notting Hill and handy for the Shepherd's Bush Empire (in fact performers often stay here), the K West Hotel has a terrific spa and while some rooms and suites are at the luxury end (in quality and price), if booked ahead there are deluxe rooms for much less than £100 a night.

The Ridgemount Hotel

65-67 Gower Street, London WC1E 6HJ

Tel: 020 7636 1141

Convenient for Bloomsbury and the British Museum, and a short walk from the shopping in Oxford Street, the Ridgemount is another real good London hotel deal. It's a family-run hotel in a handsome Georgian terrace, and about half its 32 rooms are ensuite. Rates start at an amazing £43 for a single room with shared facilities, but even triple rooms with private bathrooms are less than the magical £100 a night figure. Great location, great price.

Seven Dials Hotel

7 Monmouth Street, London WC2H 9DA

Tel: 020 7681 0791

The Seven Dials is a hotel for theater lovers on a budget. It's in the heart of Covent Garden, with dozens of London's best West End theaters only a short walk away. Although the rooms are simple, they all have private bathrooms, TVs and direct-dial phones. It's a friendly family-run hotel, and single and double rooms can be booked for less than £100 a night, with discounts for longer stays. A great cheap London hotel bargain.
