The 2010 college football season begins today, September 2, 2010, with Alabama looking to make another run to the top, and Texas, Ohio State, Florida, and other wannabes looking to dethrone the 2009 champs. See below for an in-depth analysis of the top 2010 college football teams.
Preview of the Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC)
Defending national champion Alabama returns almost all of their team from last year and has to be considered as a serious contender for a repeat. With budding young quarterback Greg McElroy under center, and RB Mark Ingram and WR Julio Jones the Crimson Tide are going to be hard to stop on offense, and with the best defense in college football last year back at full strength, including NFL-caliber linebacker Donte Hightower, points are going to be hard to come by for opposing teams. Alabama is almost a shoo-in for a BCS bowl game and could well be playing for all the marbles again come January.
Texas Longhorns Preview (Big12)
Colt McCoy may be gone, but sophomore stud Garrett Gilbert takes over at quarterback for the Longhorns, and he is likely to grow up fast. The Horns as usual have got talent at almost every position on offense and defense, and arguably possess the best secondary in the league with upperclassmen Curtis Brown, Chykie Brown, and Aaron Williams all returning. Do not be surprised to see the Longhorns back in the championship game again in 2010.
Preview of the Ohio State Buckeyes (Big 10)
Ohio State's fate in 2010 rests largely on the shoulders of junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who had a breakout game in the 2009 Rose Bowl. Pryor is surrounded by a plethora of talent on offense, and the Buckeyes should be scoring a lot of points this year. The defense also looks solid, with a great defensive line and linebacker corps, but a slightly inexperienced secondary. If Pryor continues to mature, the sky is the limit for the Buckeyes.
Florida Gators Preview (SEC)
Although Tim Tebow is gone, the Florida Gators have a solid QB in John Brantley to step in and as always are loaded with talent. Given coach Urban Meyer has been dealing with health problems, and some big transitions on both sides of the ball, it might be tough for the Gators to match last year's 13-1 record, but most experts still expect a solid performance and a good shot at a BCS bowl for Florida this year.
The 2010 College Football Season Kicks Off September 2nd
A brief look at the four games today involving Top 20 teams below.
Florida A&M at Miami - The No.13 Miami Hurricanes start off their season taking on another Florida team, but given the difference in talent levels this one should be a blowout.
Marshall at Ohio State - The Thundering Herd of Marshall visits Columbus for a match up with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State is ranked No. 2 in the country and is a 28 point favorite over Marshall.
USC at Hawaii - The preseason 14th ranked Trojans begin their 2010 campaign in sunny Hawaii, and look to improve on a somewhat mediocre 9-4 performance last year. USC is favored by 21.5 over Hawaii.
Pittsburgh at Utah - The Pittsburgh Panthers make a visit to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes. This could well be the best game of the day as the Panthers are ranked No. 15 in the country, and most pollsters have the Utes somewhere between 20th-25th. Utah is favored by 3 points at home.
