The conservative commentator Ann Coulter made the claim on Sean Hannity's show on Fox News on Feb. 25 2011 that Sarah Palin is fueling speculation she may run for the 2012 Republican nomination for the U.S. Presidency because she wants higher fees at speaking engagements.
"I think she's saying that (she might run) because she also said Newt Gingrich told her you can get higher speaking fees if you pretend you are running for President," Coulter told Hannity. She did not go on to reveal if Palin herself, or anyone else, told her that Gingrich had given this advice. Moments before in the interview she said Palin would not run.
Palin Behind Obama in Polls
Palin, the former governor of Alaska, who was plucked from virtual political obscurity by John McCain to run with him in his failed bid for the Oval Office in 2008, stepped down as Alaskan governor in 2009, wrote a book and now continues to do speaking engagements. She also continues to suggest that she is still considering a run for the office of the President.
Recent polls that asked Americans to select between Obama and Palin in a hypothetical Presidential race found Palin trailing Obama by a wide-margin. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll released in Dec., 6 of 10 respondents said they would not vote for Palin were she to run. In a choice between the two, Obama lead Palin by 54% to 39%.
Also in December an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll had President Obama leading Ms. Palin by 55% to 33%. At that same time the TPM poll tracker had her rating the worst of many potential Republican candidates for Presidency in head-to-head hypothetical battles with Obama. Mike Huckabee polled best, in a statistical tie with the President.
Coulter Says Palin is Doing Just Fine Without the Presidency
Coulter ran through a list of potential candidates - she thinks Mitt Romney is the Republican Party's best hope in 2012 - and said Palin is one who stands to lose by running. She told Hannity it's not a question of her not believing in Palin because she does. “The only reason I inadvertently voted for McCain was because Sarah Palin was on the ticket," she said.
"But she is so huge right now. She has so much power. She sends out a twitter on death panels and she shuts down the health care debate. I think it would be a step down for her to run for president. I think Sarah Palin should keep doing what she’s doing. And I don’t think she’s going to run.”
