June 20 is Father's Day in the USA, Canada, and the UK in 2010. Ever since 1966 when Father's Day became a national holiday, children of all ages have celebrated and honored their fathers on each third Sunday of June.

Father's Should Have A Special Day, Too

In the early 1900s, after listening to a church sermon about the new Mother's Day, Sonora Smart Dodd, a young mother in Spokane, Washington, decided that fathers should have a special day, too. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, had raised his six children as a single father after their mother died during childbirth.

Various attempts were made over the years to declare Father's Day a national holiday. Numerous presidential proclamations were made, but Father's Day didn't become official until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

Father's Day Cards and Crafts

The Kaboose.com family website comes through with a large selection of crafts, cards, coloring sheets, and more, all dedicated to Father's Day. In the Father's Day cards section, children can choose between instructions for printable cards for coloring and handmade cards, including the traditional Father's Day Tie Card, a card that looks like a shirt and tie with a special message written under the tie.

Father's Day crafts include a "King Dad" crown, a monogrammed and hand-painted hammer, a trophy, a TV photo frame, and more, along with a gallery of finished crafts and a gift guide.

The ABCTeach.com website provides a Father's Day theme unit, including a variety of activity sheets and coloring pages, border paper, signs, and craft instructions.

Father's Day Coloring Pages

Children can present finished coloring pages directly to the men in their lives or they can cut out and use the images as clip art for handmade cards.

Kaboose.com provides a special collection of printable Father 's Day coloring pages and cards. Children can choose from images of dads and kids having fun or exchanging gifts, as well as "Happy Father's Day" and "I Love Dad" signs.
