Americans are long familiar with the March holiday St. Patrick's Day, and parents will want to share this days and its significance with their children. But there are also some fun – even silly – holidays that families can share. Parents can pick a few of these to celebrate throughout March (in addition to the first day of Spring!).
National Peanut Butter Lovers' Day – March 1
Okay, so it's not really a national holiday, but – according to Holiday Insights – it is certainly a fun day to celebrate one's love of the creamy stuff. Why not bake a batch of peanut butter cookies or just scoop a spoonful out of the jar? Yum!
National Frozen Food Day – March 6
Another day to celebrate by eating! Why not take the kids down the frozen food aisle at the supermarket and come up with an entire meal made of frozen foods? The kids can probably help with preparation as well if the food can be cooked in the microwave.
Middle Name Pride Day – March 10
This holiday is just what one would expect. This is the day to take pride in a person's middle name. Maybe the family can call each other by middle names only. How confusing (and silly) will that get?
Johnny Appleseed Day – March 11
Most kids have heard the story of how Johnny Appleseed traveled across America planting apple trees. Why not have the kids pretend they are Johnny Appleseed and eat an apple or two?
Plant a Flower Day – March 12
Spring is almost here! What better way to celebrate it than planting a flower? Either buy one from the nursery already blooming or plant one by seed. Kids love to watch plants grow – the anticipation is agonizing because it's slow, but it's also satisfying.
Jewel Day – March 13
How many stores have the quarter machines at the front, chock full of little cheap rings, bracelets, and necklaces? How many little girls would love to receive one on this day? An inexpensive but fun way to celebrate!
Learn About Butterflies Day – March 14
In preparation for summer, parents and kids can spend time together learning all about butterflies. Foremost's Butterflies is a kid-friendly site with that very theme!
Incredible Kids Day – March 15
Parents can use this day to tell their kids how incredible they are!
National Goof Off Day – March 22
Who can resist this day? Many people work and work and work, so find a few minutes (or take the whole day, if possible) to goof off with the family!
National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day – March 24
For anyone who needs an excuse to enjoy chocolate covered raisins, here's a day devoted to it!
Take a Walk in the Park Day – March 30
After all the eating in March, from peanut butter to frozen foods, apples to chocolate covered raisins, a nice, leisurely stroll in the park is in order. Kids love to go to the park. Why not take a walk and enjoy the new grass and buds on the trees? Maybe there are a few birds chirping too. Enjoy the first signs of spring in one of the best ways imaginable!
Celebrating holidays is just one good way to have enriching, rewarding family time. Yes, everyone celebrates big holidays like St. Patrick's Day, but why not make one or more of these light-hearted days a reason to kick back and have fun too?
