As busy as a hive of buzzing bees . . . that’s Genoa, Italy. This oceanside city, as Italy’s leading port and trade center, is full of activity; its economy revolving mainly around the port. It is the capital of the region of Liguria, Italy and is dubbed “La Superba,” because of its numerous marble palaces.
Genoa appears to rise from the sea in magnificent glamour. Two massive towers form striking landmarks in the center of the city. The old city is a maze of winding streets and alleys. The newer parts of town are epitomized by tall modern buildings and colorful gardens and villas. A lighthouse, standing tall on the west side, is the emblem of the city. You can say Genoa is a conglomerate of businesses and activities. Food shops are tucked away inside the portals of former palaces. Carpenter’s workshops are situated between name-brand outlets. Grand palaces and modest houses sit next to each other surrounded by banks and churches. Narrow streets are filled with vendors, merchandise, and buyers . . . Colorful and noisy and busy . . . that’s Genoa!

Genoa is a city of great versatility and has several unique neighborhoods. Downtown Genoa (The Historical Center) is an activity-filled place. The hub, the Piazza De Ferrari (public square), is surrounded by public buildings, banks, and offices, with busy streets radiating from it in all directions. It is one of the largest downtown areas in Europe. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most decadent, although reclamation work is currently underway to improve city conditions. There are, however, several wonderful hotels in this up-and-coming fashionable district. The Golden Tulip Hotel, Star Hotels President, Miramare, and Jolly Hotel Plaza are just a few. These hotels are within walking distance of several restaurants, banks, and popular attractions. $84-300

Hotels in Porto Antico
A mixture of old buildings and modern edifices, this ancient port was revitalized during the 1990’s in an effort to bring people down to the port once again. Old warehouses were converted into exhibition spaces. Open stages host waterside performances. Within the port is a skating rink, cinema, and children’s playground. There are a number of cafes and bistros. A converted cotton warehouse is now a major shopping center with bars, cinemas, and music stores. The Port is also the home of the Acquario di Genova (Aquarium of Genova), Europe’s largest aquarium. Visitors can view the entire city from the “Bigo”, a crane-like device that works as an elevator. The premier Hotel Savoia Genova is within walking distance of the Principe Station, the Aquarium, the Children’s City (la citta dei Bambini), Palazzo Ducale, and Genoa’s Congress Centre. Hotels within Porto Antico, itself, include the Alexander Hotel and the Galles Hotel.
