The Lust For Flesh
"Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." Genesis 9:3. A biblical scripture, not only God's words given to Moses, but also the words and scripture used in the opening sequence that serve as the perfect precursor and warning to the viewer of things to come. It's harvest time and 'Long Pig', under the direction of Carlo Rodriguez, shows no mercy on the audience's visual sensitivities. In the opening scene, we see the brutal and masochastic dismembering of an already blood-soaked girl. After witnessing this intense display, one can only imagine how she got this way. As 'Long Pig' continues, we come to realize that the possibilities are endless.
The Preacher Man Will Judge You
In all great gore films, the pretty, young, and sexually active always get the axe. However, in this eye-popping blood fest, the "old school" formula of who's gonna be lunch that day, goes just one step further. In most instances, 'Long Pig' leaves us with a rather disturbing feeling of judgment upon it's victims--did they actually deserve to be carved up and set at a fancy table display? Enter the Preacher Man (George Russell). With his almost pentecostic, speaking in tongues, hellfire and brimstone sermons, and all-around general insanity, he would most certainly give you an emphatic YES!! But, only before this leader of flesh-eaters slits your throat and spreads you on a cracker.
A Film Worth Seeing
'Long Pig' is surely destined to become a classic in a way that few independent horror films can manage. In 2008, all those who participated in 'Long Pig' , were given the honor of being awarded and respected for their dedication and hard work at two major horror film festivals. Best trailer, best actor and best underground film are just a few of the trophies that now sit on the Gothic Films mantel. If you love films that feed your horror senses and force you to think, or you just want to enjoy a good flick this weekend, then 'Long Pig' certainly delivers.
