Nestled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains near Calgary, Alberta, the Banff Springs Hotel is alive with paranormal activity.

History of the Banff Springs Hotel

The original wooden structure of the Banff Springs Hotel was built in 1888 as a result of the westward movement of the Canadian Pacific Railway. William Van Horne, the Vice President of the CPR, ordered the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel because of the breathtaking mountain scenery and the natural hot springs. He saw the potential of this site as a world-class tourist resort.

In 1926, the original wooden hotel burned down and massive reconstruction began. The new hotel was fashioned after a Scottish castle with towers and stone walls. In the 1930s, the Banff Springs Hotel became a popular destination for celebrities and royalty. The hotel became known as the Castle of the Rockies.

Other well-known hotels in the Canadian Pacific chain are the Royal York Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta, the Empress Hotel in Victoria, the Hotel Vancouver, the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, and the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.

The Secret Room at the Banff Springs Hotel

When building the original wooden hotel, there was an error made by the contractor. They ended up with a room that had no windows or doors but it was kept secret by the builders. The room was not discovered until the fire occurred in 1926. There had been reports of apparitions roaming the hall in the vicinity of this room.

Room 873 at the Banff Springs Hotel

This room is no longer in service and the door has been covered with brick and board to match the rest of the hallway. It is rumoured that a family was killed in this room. Because a little girl’s fingerprints on the mirrors inside the room could not be wiped off, it was decided to seal off the room. Guests can see ghosts of family members in the hallway.

The Doomed Bride at the Banff Springs Hotel

There are two stories regarding the ghost of a bride at the hotel. Dressed in her wedding gown, she was descending a staircase. She tripped on her gown and fell down the stairs and died of a broken neck. The other story reveals that there were candles on the staircase and her gown caught fire and in a panic she fell down the staircase and died. There have been reports of the apparition of a young woman in a long flowing white dress walking down the staircase or dancing in the ballroom. Hotel staff have heard noises in the bridal suite on days when there were no registered guests for the room. People have also seen the spirit of a young woman on the stairs with her dress on fire. Then she vanishes.

The Bellman at the Banff Springs Hotel

The most popular ghost is that of Sam Macauley, a bellman who died in 1976. Not too long after Sam’s death, the ghost of a bellman wearing a 1960s uniform has been seen and the description fitted Sam perfectly. He has been known to help people who are locked out of their rooms or turn on the room lights or help carry bags. His favourite haunt is the 9th floor. Anytime people try to tip him or start a conversation, the ghost of Sam will vanish.

Other Ghosts at the Banff Springs Hotel

Hotel guests and staff have reported sightings of the ghost bartender telling customers that they have drank too much and need to go to bed. The spirit of a headless man playing the bagpipes has been reported on occasion. Guests have reported a chilly breeze on the staircase where the bride had fallen.

The Banff Springs Hotel is a grand hotel and it’s understandable why people from the spirit world don’t want to leave.

Although I did not see any of the ghosts, I spoke with someone who did. He saw the bride after only 3 martinis! I was going to look for her that evening however there is no way I can handle 3 martinis! Oh well, maybe next time.

The "hidden room" was a because the contractors actually built to hotel backwards. Van Horn Showed up 90% of the way thru construction and FLIPPED, demanded that the top at least be built facing the proper direction. This room was destoyed in the fire.
There was no murder in Room 873. 873 used to be ajoined to the adjacent storage closet and the closet beside that one. Room 873 used to be the public washroom for that floor, hence, two doors. Ladies and mens. This is why when you go there now, there is clearly a door frame where there is no door. The childrens finger prints belong to room 435 (i BELIEVE), I can't confirm anything paranormal or murderous here.
Sam the Bellman. I confess, ive had reports of staff in old uniforms doing things where staff dont exsist and staff that have even helped me when no such staff member existed. Cant say any more.
The Doomed Bride is actually "The burning bride". While decending the staircase lit with candles, her dress caught fire and she subsequently tripped and fell to her death. This is not true. That particular stairwell was built in 1970-something and during a reunion party it was confessed that this was made up at that time.
There is however a light object that lives on mezzanine 2 and in the new front lobby, its disk shapped and shimmers and moved very quickly. I caught this on camera and showed others, i have seen it with my eyes and I am not the only witness on more than one occasion.
There are black bouncing 'orbs' that also live in the bow valley, they bounce and zip and arre partially transparent. These have been sited frequently in the accomadations across the street and various places in canmore.
Ive never seen it, but apparently there is an old woman in an old housekeeping uniform that on occasion has moved items inside a room (never out of the room) and cleans while you sleep and walks through walls. More than a few guests checked out in the middle of the night claiming this story.
THere is a shadow man that lives in the underground parking at Townhouse Apartments downtown banff. Walks in between the cars and snoops, doesnt seem to be care/be aware of anyone.
The entire area is concentrated with negative ions. Dont know if that has anything to do with abnormally high number of reports from that area, but thats what i chalked it up too.
Dont be afraid to go stay at teh Banff Springs, its an awesome place!

I was fortunate to experience the most elaborate, phenomenal brunch at the Banff Springs Hotel in 1994. You could feel the energy everywhere, it was amazing! In Jan. 2010 I became president of a paramormal investigation team, Meetup/M-I-S-T in Sarasota, Fl. We are a dedicated group having investigated personal homes, restuarants, state and national paranormal conventions as well as a recent investigation of the Myrtle Plantation with Brad and Barry Klinge of Ghost Lab in St. Francesville,La. I am also an honor student at Keiser University in Culinary Arts. Hope to accomplish the Culinary externship program at the Banff Springs Hotel, if fortunate enough... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Bonne Bryan. B109z@verizon.net

I heard this story from a tour escort who stayed there with tour groups many times...

Apparently, there is a very small room where the tour escorts would stay in an older part of the hotel. In the middle of the night she felt some "people" come in through the locked door & walk around and around inside the room, as if they are looking for something. She was unable to sleep, but she could not even move for some reason.

She was exhausted after that night, so she asked one of her colleagues whether they experienced something like this. The colleague told her that she stays in the room quite often herself, and that she too has the visitors in her room.

According to the colleague, they are the ghosts of the workers who died of the 1926 fire and they are looking for water. She suggested that a glass of water to be left on a night stand for them at night. Although being skeptical, the tour escort did that every time she stayed in that room. The "people" still come in sometimes, but they will leave the room right away - maybe because they found the glass of water, she doesn't know...

Interesting! My (now-ex) husband and five-month-old son and I spent a week there, in 1994. I am usually quite sensitive to the presence of spirits, but I didn't sense anything like that while we were there. I would think that some of the stories are true and some are just someone's imagination. The idea of a bride's dress being caught fire by candles doesn't sound right to me, considering that there were electric lights well before the hotel was built. It sounds like a likely story for someone to make up.

There was something that really stuck in my mind from our visit there, however. On the walls, there were many old photographs and one really impressed me. It seems like it was on the bottom floor, down where the shops were, but I don't remember for sure. Anyway, the picture is of four young people, two guys, two girls, probably in their mid to late teens (actually, there may have been five guys, but I can only picture four in my mind). I believe it was taken during the 1910s, shortly before WWI. They are standing on a raft in the water. The two young men are dressed in bathing costumes. One of the girls is dressed in feminine garb, which would have been old-fashioned by that time. It seems like she was holding a parasol. The other young woman is wearing men's clothing. I wondered if the two were dressed for some sort of play or something. Below the photo, it says that, a few minutes after it was taken, the raft collapsed and the two young women were drowned. As I stood there and looked at it, I felt like I could see the accident happen, and the young men try to save the girls. I don't think the girls could swim. Looking at the one young man, I really got the feeling that his inability to save the life of the girl he had his arm around in the pic really affected him, and that he never quite got over it. I don't know if my impressions about it are true, or if it was just my imagination. There have been times that I have had impressions about things and later found out that my impressions were right on.

I would love to go back to the Banff Springs Hotel. In fact, I now have a situation where I might get remarried, and I would love to spend a honeymoon there. That it why I looked it up and came upon this article.

I live in London UK and visited Banff Springs Hotel about 10 years ago, the place is a bit creepy but I didnt see anything at the time but did feel quite unwell whilst in the building which I thought was strange. I had no idea of all these stories and room 873 until earlier this year. Whilst in France on a ski holiday, we happened to get talking to the waitress who was from Canada. We mentioned we are getting married in Banff in Dec and she asked if we were staying at the Banff springs (we said no). She then went on to say she used to work at the hotel and told us about room 873 and all the tales. She said she didn't know if hey were all true but there were several strange experiences her and the staff encountered, the hotel found it hard to keep it's night staff, she said she had seen orbs and and had something speak to her in a strange language whilst in a cleaning cupboard..... She said she left shortly afterwards. I'm back in Banff in Dec so I will pay a visit and see what I can find one night time!
