Health Myths: Not Superfoods

Are Bananas, Oranges, Broccoli, Spinach and Soy Really Good for You?

It's taken for granted that our national food guides are accurate, but many of the common "good for you" foods may play havok with thyroid hormones, sugar levels and more

Conventional medicine recognizes the importance of good nutrition but, as with pharmaceutical drugs, medical science often considers only one aspect of a food while ignoring its holistic impact, “side effects,” or elements that make a fruit or vegetable good for one person but not for everyone. If you’re eating what your doctor recommends, chances are there are foods you think of as good for you that aren’t: among them oranges, bananas, and for many people broccoli, spinach and soy.

Myth: The Vitamin C in Oranges Helps Fight Cold and Flu

Oranges are supposed to be a great source of vitamin C, which is why orange juice is recommended to stave off cold and flu. The trouble is, oranges are both sweet and very acidic. They are considered a high glycemic food, spiking blood sugar, which is a stress to the immune system. They also increase acidity, weakening the body’s ability to fight off bacteria and viruses, and increase congestion and mucus production.

Better options for a vitamin C immune system boost:

  • Apples are high in vitamin C and also contain plenty of fiber, making them a low-glycemic food.
  • Lemons contain as much vitamin C as oranges, but they improve the body’s acid-alkali balance.

Myth: Bananas are a Good Source of Potassium, Fiber and Energy

Bananas are reputed to be a great source of potassium (which is true) and of energy. But they are also high glycemic, spiking blood sugar and disrupting long-term energy levels.

Celery has more potassium than bananas, and wolfberries are a better, more balanced source of energy and nutrition – as well as a host of other vitamins.

Myth: Eat Broccoli and Spinach for Iron

No mistake – leafy greens are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and in this case, iron. But what few realize is that broccoli and spinach are part of a family of vegetables that contain chemicals called “progoitrins” which mildly suppress thyroid function. Other vegetables in the Brassica family include kale, turnips, mustard, and cauliflower.

Someone trying to lose weight by eating more green veggies will be better served to focus on other vegetables rather than broccoli or spinach, which lower the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood and sabotage weight loss.

Myth: Soy as a Miracle Food

Soy has been touted as a perfect protein source. It is low in fat, easily digested, and easier on the planet’s resources since it’s vegetarian. But what you don’t know can hurt you, as many women (and men) who consume abundant amounts of soy have been finding: soy in excess can contribute to hormone imbalance.

Holistic practitioners now say that tofu and soy have never been consumed in healthy Asian diets to the extent we have been led to believe, and that soy is best consumed as an occasional food rather than a dietary mainstay. Raw foodists tend to recommend avoiding soy and soy products entirely.

oranges, bananas, soy, spinach and brocoli are very healthy foods, the American Heart Association and all the greatest medical associations in the world recommend these foods. Every now and then there are all kind of people that say that they have found the magic food. All that is written above is missleading, some examples being: orange has a low glycemic index and a very low glycemic load, and banana has a moderate glycemic index.

In reality, apples are very low in vitamin C (about 10% of what oranges contain). However, oranges are not particularly high either. It depends on what you compare them to. Some fruits and berries contain over ten times as much vitamin C.

At the same time, people seem to be living longer, seems like things are a bit better.... (Well, I just wish some of these yaahoos would get it right!

Brocolli and Spinach - aha, these are good for those with hyperthyroidism then.

Re bananas: I never had a sugar spike with them - in fact, when I used to have trouble with low blood sugar, and therefore with sugar spikes, I could not eat oranges or apples without a sugar spike, but bananas always evened it out.

Hmmmm. Different for different people? Thanks for writing this.

Actually Bananas don't spike your blood sugar.... The author should perform their research next time...
A banana has a glycemic index of 52 and 24 grams of available carbohydrate. This gives a glycemic load of 12. In comparison, an apple having a glycemic index of 38 and 15 grams of available carbohydrate has a glycemic load of 6 … Although an apple may be a little better choice for a snack, eating a banana isn’t all that bad either because foods with glycemic loads in the low teens and below are the ones that should be selected as part of a balanced diet. (source: USDA.gov)
Despite being erroneously called “fattening” and too high in sugar, a small banana only contains about 100 calories, which is not much more than a medium apple. Nor should it raise your blood glucose level too high. (source: American Diabetes Association)

This article is so shortsighted. Should we be eating chips, meat, and cheese for better health instead? This is enraging.

Spinach is not in the brassica family. This article is extremely foolish.

I can't eat oranges they upset my stomach and I have read that a better Vitamin C in food is brussel sprouts, they have like five times the amount of vitamin C in them compared to oranges.
I do eat a lot of banana and have never had problems with them, and they are good for upset stomach.

I agree with this Guest. Years ago, they said chocolate was bad, coffee was bad, alcohol beverages were bad, now I heard on the news that "too much" fiber is bad too. Seriously people, no one knows anything and all these fruits and vegetables is good for you. ANYTHING that you eat too much of is obviously bad for you. One orange a day and one banana a day would do you really good, while having grapes for breakfast, lunch and dinner for an entire month would obviously be bad. Please just use common sense. Any food is bad if you eat too much of it, not only fruits.

Celery DOES NOT have more potassium than a banana. A medium banana, on average has 440mg where 1 stalk of celery has 270.

There are quite a few statements on this page that are incorrect!

oranges, and bananas, and baby spinach are very good for you and very delightful cut up in slices and made into a salad with very light salad dressing.

Regarding the comment about spinach, isn't it much better than iceberg? When you say that they (spinach and broccoli) "mildly" suppress thyroid function, this is temporary isn't it? And I wonder how much this effects digestion. I am a bit skeptical as to the detrimental effects of the suppression. I imagine the dressing on the salad to have far worse consequences.

It is true that we are often mislead by marketing ploys that pose certain foods as 'healthy" when they may not really be. I think that processed and packaged foods are most concerning potentially. Best to try to cook so you know what is really in what you are eating. Bottom line, there is no perfect food.

I'm going to have to agree with the author on all points except broccoli and spinach which have high vitamin, mineral, and fiber content. As far as the blood sugar spike resulting from high carb fruits, it is quite true that they can cause a small spike though nothing close to eating a slice of white bread or a basket of fries. Total carb counts too in weight loss and choosing lower carb fruits such as berries and plums are a much better choice than bananas, oranges and even apples.

I'm also going to have to add to the list of supposed "super foods" that should be avoided. The main one being peanuts. Although they're low carb, high in relatively good fat and protein, they are a major allergen and promote an imbalance of omega fatty acids. Skim milk is the other one. While skim milk and low fat milks may contain more calcium, without the fat, your body can't use the calcium anyway so it's basically just milk flavored sugar water.

I guess the obvious ones would be too obvious to mention but I'll do it anyway: Potatos. Although they're low calorie, they're worse than eating a spoonful of sugar and we all know that's bad for weight loss. And corn products which can also mess with your hormone balance like soy and are very high on the GI.

Awesome post. The naysayers need to do their homework.

Dear author,

These are not health 'myths' .. For example, Bananas are a good source of potassium and fiber, yet you say that's a 'myth' just because of their high glycemic index. That doesn't make sense.. the nutrients in a Banana are somehow negated by the glycemic index..? Nope, it's still a good source of potassium and other nutrients, regardless of the glycemic index. Also, just because there are better sources of potassium does not mean that Bananas should be disregarded as a good source.

Your article is a 'load of bollocks' as another commenter stated.

Not trying to sound negative but were all gunna die someday. How about we all take a breather stop listening to all this bullox which is causing us stress, which we all know that stress is a factor that can link and worsen other problems and lets just try common sense. Find it awkward that ppl in other countries are going hungry and here we are with a multitude of choices stressing about what and what not to eat..how about we just eat and be merry give a smile as we break a kit kat and share it with another :)..my grandma God rest her soul said listen here punk!(she was a tough woman lol) your a smart kid remember that. Doesnt matter how smart u are youll be considered a fool if you give heed to words of a fool..Moderation is liberation, accessation(my own word meaning over abundant) is devestation

Bananas and oranges, like almost all fruits, are perfect foods--fruit itself is the only perfect food (I have done extensive research on this via the scientific method and critical thinking). Anyone who says what is above is not to be trusted. Please read Doug Graham and others so you can understand this. Any veggies--even leafy greens--are second-rate foods, but are next in line (along with raw nuts) after fruits, but ideally should be eaten raw. Grains are bad, as are all animal foods. If a food can be enjoyed raw all by itself (no seasoning), then you know that it is at least a candidate for ideal human (primate) food, even though some raw foods that MIGHT be enjoyed are also bad for us, like raw animal food (meat, eggs, dairy).
