One of the most difficult grooming chores men must undertake if they choose to grow a beard or moustache is the upkeep and maintenance of facial hair.

Trimming one's beard or moustache can be quite a difficult task, especially for first-timers or the inexperienced. It requires a great deal of patience and a steady hand, so be prepared to take at least a half-hour initially when learning.

How to Trim that Beard Down to Size!

Unkempt beards are unattractive and generally inappropriate in most formal situations – as with one's hair on the scalp, it is important to keep the look groomed and well kept.

The only tool necessary for the job is a small pair of grooming clippers – steel scissors that are normally found within men's grooming kits or available for purchase separately at a nominal cost.

First, locate any stray hairs that are standing out like springs, and clip them down immediately. Then, identify trouble areas where the hair may have grown faster or longer than the rest. Open the clipper and run the open blade against the grain of the hair, causing it to stand up. This will make it much easier to clip! Decide upon a uniform length and repeat this process, the jawline typically being the most difficult part.

Trimming a Moustache Takes Time

Properly trimming a moustache can take a bit more time than trimming down a beard, depending on the style of facial hair one is working with. Full beards can be very time consuming, while soul patches and goatees are much easier to manage. The moustache on the upper lip, however, can be somewhat difficult given the proximity of the hair to the nose as well as the lips.

Men who wear a moustache alongside a beard typically like to grow their moustache out a bit longer than those men who do not wear a beard as well. A closer clipping requires the scissors to be used against the grain (gently, so as not to cut the skin by mistake) as per the method used to clip the beard, while those with longer whiskers can simply trim stray hairs and hairs that protrude over the upper lip.

While electric trimmers are commonly available and frequently purchased, they do not do nearly as well of a job in trimming a moustache or a beard as well as a deft pair of hands and a quality pair of steel scissors. Taking the time to do it the right way, and learning how to groom oneself with the proper tools will go a long way in improving your appearance and your self-esteem!
