Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced on their blog the launch of the free PlayStation Official App for owners of iPhone and Android mobile phones. Not to be confused with the rumoured PlayStation Phone reported by sites like CNET to be releasing soon, the app can't be used to play games but does provide access to certain features of the PlayStation Network, as well as the latest video game news from Sony.
PlayStation Network Trophies from PS3 Games
A top feature of the app for PS3 owners is the ability to view their PlayStation Network trophies and those of their friends. Trophies are awarded to players in PS3 games for specific achievements or milestones, such as completing levels, and can be either bronze, silver, gold or platinum. As well as being available to view on a PS3, these trophies can also now be viewed on the PlayStation App, with the exact trophies for each game listed. Trophies can also be compared with those of friends.
It's also possible to see on the app when friends are online so PS3 players know when they can play online matches against them in games like Call of Duty or Gran Turismo.

The PlayStation App also gives access to the latest video game news from Sony about all their PlayStation platforms, giving a portable and easy to browse view of the content from their European Web site. Content from the European PlayStation Blog can also be viewed, as well as an A-Z list of PS2, PS3 and PSP games, including videos. There's also information on the additional peripherals and services available to PlayStation owners, such as PlayStation Move and 3D TV.

PlayStation Official App Available Now
Sony PS2, PS3 and PSP owners in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and The Netherlands can download the free PlayStation Official App now from the App Store or Android Marketplace. The European PlayStation Blog has announced that the next update for the app is already being planned, as well as a roll-out to other countries in the region. There is currently no news on when the app will be available for other regions, including the US.
The PlayStation Official App is compatible with any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad installed with Apple iOS 4 or above, as well as most Android mobile phones using version 1.6 or above.
