Jobs For Spanish Majors

Career Opportunities For the Bilingual

The Hispanic/Spanish speaking population is booming in America. This change has brought about a demand for individuals fluent in both English and Spanish.

The Hispanic/Spanish speaking population is growing quickly in America. This is especially true in southern states such as Florida and Texas. With this change comes a need for programs and services specifically geared to the Hispanic culture. This includes everything from marketing and advertising, to education, social services and medical care. Consequently, career opportunities for those fluent in both English and Spanish are booming.

If you are bilingual, you might want to consider some of the following career opportunities.

Counseling/Social Services - There is a great need for bilingual Counselors and Social Workers. Most of these positions require a Masters Degree in a human services field such as Social Work, Counseling, Mental Health or Psychology, although there may be some positions available that require only a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Sales/Marketing - The change in demographics brings about the potential for new markets and new consumers. Desiring to tap into this market, advertisers, retailers and marketing researchers are desperate to find individuals who are familiar with the Latino community and fluent in both Spanish and English. The requirements for these positions vary from a high school diploma to a Bachelor‘s in Marketing, Public Relations or Advertising.

Patient Advocate/Educator - Many medical clinics/health centers are in need of individuals to translate, educate and handle patient complaints and concerns. Many hospitals require that one have education/training in medical social work, while smaller clinics may be willing to hire someone without a formal education.

Educator - Bilingual/ESL Teachers and Principals fluent in Spanish are in great demand. To teach one will need proper teacher certification/endorsement in the area in which they will be teaching. Principals are typically required to have an advanced degree in Education/Educational Leadership. There are also opportunities available in Early Childhood Education and Child Care Centers.

Customer Service - Individuals are needed to provide customer care to individuals who do not fluently speak English. You will need to be patient, courteous and able to work well under pressure. Some positions will require a Bachelor’s Degree while others desire a High School Diploma with some customer service experience. Opportunities are available with manufacturers, software companies and the telecommunication industry.

Human Resources - Employee Relations/Recruiters are needed to hire and train individuals who do not speak English. You will more than likely need to be able to read, speak and write fluently in Spanish/English.

Other opportunities growing due to a change in demographics include Real Estate, Outreach/Diversity, Banking/Finance, Government, Law and even Ministry.

it was interesting, but it wasn't delivering what it says it would. Nothing on here was for Spanish majors, just things that it would help to be bilingual for.
