The 39th annual American Music Awards held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Nov. 20, 2011 saw Taylor Swift emerge the big winner and Justin Bieber get shut out. The awards also saw a bundle of highlight performances, including a Christmas song from Bieber and the pop star jumping into a LMFAO number to close the show..
Last year Justin Bieber won 4 AMA's, including the 'Artist of the Year,' which he won over an impressive group, beating out Eminem, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The other awards he won were the Favorite Album award for My World 2.0, the Breakthrough Artist Award and the Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist award. He performed on the 2010 AMA's, singing and playing his then newly-released song Pray, complete with a gospel choir in back of him.
Taylor Swift Wins AMA Artist of the Year
The big winner on the night was Swift, who won 3 awards including 'Artist of the Year'. Given the work she put in on her solo album Speak Now, which won for 'Country Album,' she was carried away by her second 'Artist of the Year' win (she also won in 2009). "I ended up writing the record by myself," she said when accepting her country album award. "So the fact that you would honor it this way, you have no idea what this means to me."
Justin Bieber: Performs at 2011 AMA
This time around Bieber was only up for one award, the Pop/Rock Male Artist and that award went to Bruno Mars, Mars first career AMA win. Bieber's performance on the 2011 show was lower key than last year, he sang his Christmas song Mistletoe' from his recently released record 'Under the Mistletoe'. Or at least his performance on the show was initially low key.
Justin Bieber and LMFAO Party Rock
Bieber returned at the end of the show to dance in a wild finish with LMFAO, doing their Party Rock Anthem. LMFAO sang 'Go Bieber' over and over as Bieber did a solo dance at the front of the stage. The high-energy song ended with performers stripping off pants to dance in boxer shorts with a happy face on the front. Included at the end of the song was actor David Hasselhoff, who also stripped down to his underwear.
Bieber kept his pants on.
