Chick Corea, The Early Years

Born Armando Anthony Cores, Chick Corea began studying the piano at the age of four in his hometown of Chelsea, Massachessetts. His professional career got off to a roaring start when he had the opportunity to work with jazz singer and bandleader Cab Calloway. This led to more opportunities to work with leaders in jazz, including saxophonist Stan Getz, flutist Herbie Mann and trumpeter Blue Mitchell.

Chick Corea made his recording debut in 1966 as a leader for Tones for Joan's Bones. He went on to accompany music legends Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespe and Miles Davis.

Chick Corea, 16-Time Grammy Winner

Chick Corea is viewed as one of the most innovative composers and prolific recording artists of this era. Among his albums, Return to Forever, Light as a Feather and Romantic Warrior, serve as defining examples of the jazz-rock genre. Spain remains his most popular composition. It has been performed and recorded by many musicians around the globe. He has performed music spanning many genres, from Mozart piano concerti to avant-garde, from bebop to children's music and from chamber music to fusion.

In 2006, he was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award by the National Endowment for the Arts. This is the USA's highest honor in jazz. Fellow 2006 honorees included Ray Barretto, Tony Bennett, Bob Brookmeyer, Buddy DeFranco, Freddie Hubbard and John Levy.

Most recently, Chick Corea joined forces with saxophonist Kenny Garret, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Roy Haynes to form The Freedom Band. The band is gearing up for 2010 concert tour throughout the USA and Europe.
