Claire's Boutiques recalled children's metal charm bracelets after testing confirmed high levels of cadmium. The heavy metal poses a health risk for kids.

On May 10, 2010, Claire’s Boutiques Incorporated issued a recall on its children’s jewelry. The company discovered that the kids' bracelets contained high levels of cadmium. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a report in support of Claire’s Boutiques and to warn consumers.

Children’s Metal Charm Bracelets Recalled by Claire’s Boutiques

The Best Friends charm bracelet sets are the kids’ jewelry listed under the recall by Claire’s Boutiques. The children’s bracelets were available in Claire’s stores across the United States. The kids’ accessories were produced from February 2009 to January 2010. The jewelry typically sold for about $12.

Claire’s Boutiques Incorporated estimated that approximately 19,000 units were sold nationwide. The silver chains were available in three different styles. The bracelets shared the silver chain design with a metal heart lock charm but had the words “Best”, “Friends” or “Forever” printed on the charms in different colors.

Defects Found in Kids’ Accessories From Claire’s Boutiques

According to information released by the company, there were no reports of incident or injury based on the use of the kids’ jewelry. The recall was issued because cadmium exposure is a safety risk that can create severe and life-long health issues.

Cadmium exposure poses a threat to both children and adults. Cadmium’s high toxicity level could lead to health issues with only a brief exposure. A common result from brief interactions with cadmium is temporary lung irritation.

Extended intake of cadmium, either through the air or ingested orally, can damage an individual’s internal organs. Extensive damage to the kidneys is the common outcome from prolonged exposure to high levels of cadmium.

Actions to Take Following Recall of Jewelry for Children

The jewelry should be removed from children as soon as possible because of the small amount of cadmium that is needed to create health risks. Children could be in danger just by wearing the bracelets for short periods of time. Consumers may contact Claire’s Boutiques for a full refund or to receive a replacement product.

Consumers may contact Claire’s Boutiques Inc at (866) 859-9281 between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday to gain refund or replacement information. Individuals may also visit Claire’s website to learn more about the recall or browse other items from the company.

Additional recall information from across the nation is available to individuals on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

I'm glad they got the bracelets off the market. This could have been an even worse disaster than it already was. Cadmium poisons kids, some companies are careless during production.
