Land of Nod Rosebud Crib - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with the Land of Nod catalog company, have issued a recall for their "Rosebud" drop-side cribs.

On January 26, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for approximately 300 of the Rosebud cribs sold by Land of Nod, which is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. The cribs were manufactured by Status Furniture out of Quebec, Canada, which is now out of business. Land of Nod is part of the Crate and Barrel family of websites, and offers unique children's furniture and toys through their online site and catalog.

Description of Recalled Land of Nod Rosebud Cribs

The recalled cribs are white or "antique" (off-white) and the drop-side hardware is plastic. The recalled cribs were sold between January 2003 and September 2004, and cost approximately $600. Look for the words "Status Furniture" on the crib's label. (It's located on the headboard.) Also, if your crib shows model number "910," (which would be shown on the assembly instructions, if you still have them) then your crib is one of those recalled.

Recalled Cribs Found to Cause Potential Injury and Suffocation Hazard

As has been the case with other recalls, such as the one issued by Pottery Barn in July 2010, the Rosebud cribs have been found to cause a potential suffocation and injury hazard for children. The problem with these cribs is that the hardware on the drop-side railing can break or fail to work properly. The drop-side part of the crib can come away from the main part, which can cause serious problems if the baby or toddler gets trapped in the gap left between the side and crib.

Thirteen (13) instances of hardware failure have been reported. This means that the plastic hardware on the crib has broken, worn down, or otherwise did not work as it should. Despite this, there have been no reports of injury.

What to Do if You Have the Recalled Crib

If you own the Rosebud crib, you should stop using it and instead find an alternative safe sleeping arrangement. The Land of Nod is offering a merchandise credit since the original manufacturer of the crib is now out of business. For questions, consumers can contact the Land of Nod at (800) 933-9904 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (CST) Monday through Friday.

Consumers can also email the company (recall@landofnod.com) or look for additional information on the Land of Nod website. The CPSC has issued several recalls over the years for various brands of drop-side cribs. As a result, they are working on new recommendations for use of cribs. As a general rule they recommend not using a crib which is ten years or older and also making sure the furniture has all required pieces.
