Following on from the immensely successful original, LittleBigPlanet 2 will feature a revamped graphics engine

In 2008 Sony Computer Entertainment released LittleBigPlanet for PS3. The game featured simple, addictive gameplay and fun graphics. Perhaps the biggest draw card in the original game's favour was the total customizability of it. Players were able to create their own levels and costumes and share them over the Playstation Network with their peers. The game was universally praised, achieving an average review score of 95% according to aggregate site Metacritic, achieving a 100% in 22 publications. Many regarded the video game to be one of the best, if not the best, of the year.

Despite Danny Leaver, a level designer for developer Media Molecule, slamming the idea and claiming that the idea would be disadvantageous to the fanbase of the original and counterproductive toward both games, on the 10th of May 2010 Sony computer entertainment released a press statement confirming that LittleBigPlanet 2 was indeed in development following an accidental twitter post from musical composer Chris Leary.

Features of Little Big Planet 2

The most relieving feature for owners of the original game is that LittleBigPlanet 2 will be backwards compatible, according to the Sony media release. This means that all levels created for the original game will be playable on the sequel, allowing fans of the first game to migrate to the second without losing any of the strong community support already established.

Sony have also announced that LittleBigPlanet 2 will feature not just the capability for the user to create new levels, as in original, but that they will be able to create new games in themselves. According to Sony, this could include "racing games, flying games, shooters - [the user] can now take control of anything!" This complete control will also extend to multiplayer components of the game allowing for different varieties of multiplayer modes to be created.

Sackboy will also have new equipments and weapons to help him through the barrage of official and user created levels - such as grappling hooks, power gloves and a magic bag.

LittleBigPlanet 2 is also reported to support the PS3's upcoming motion sensor controller, though the manner of the game's support for the controller is yet to be known.

Roundup

The original LittleBigPlanet was one of the heavyweight releases for the PS3, selling over 3.3 million copies worldwide to date. In creating its successor, Sony and Media Molecule will hope to capture both the character, and the success of it in LittleBigPlanet 2.

LittleBigPlanet 2 will be available in winter 2010.
