Amateur metal detecting enthusiast Terry Herbert, from Staffordshire, England, stumbled upon the vast treasure. The gold hoard that Herbert stumbled upon was the biggest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold objects ever found. Herbert has not spoken publicly about his discovery until now. Lost Gold of the Dark Ages tells the story of the incredible discovery of buried treasure.
The Mystery of the Lost Gold of the Dark Ages
The discovery of the vast hoard of gold objects has spurred investigative research to learn the origins of the gold that has been buried for over 1,000 years. There will be several years of scientific research to learn about the gold and determine the origins of the treasures.
The gold is mysterious for many reasons. Researchers will try to learn who the gold belonged to, where it came from and why it had been buried. All of the gold objects have been broken or bent in some way, which is a mystery in itself. Adding to the mystery of who the gold belonged to and why it had been buried, is the mystery of why the precious objects had been damaged.

National Geographic has exclusive documentary access to the scientific investigation into the gold hoard. The series on cable television gives viewers a chance to hear the story from the reclusive man who made the chance discovery of the ancient gold treasure.
