Traditionally, massages are performed by a massage therapist trained in various methods and techniques. Technological advances in the modern era have lead to the development of motorized mechanical massage chairs.
Massage Chairs
Massage chairs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. They range from simple foldable cushions to sofa chair systems filled with options. Mechanical rollers move and rotate by using an electrical power source. Variable options such as pressure, speed, and mode are controlled by a remote device. The cost can range from less than a hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars for the more feature loaded chairs.
Traditional Massage
Massages have traditionally been performed by a trained professional. Massage therapists have spent years learning the techniques and methods of massage. A professional massage therapist will have completed an accredited training program. Additionally, massage therapists should also be licensed and certified. The female massage therapist may commonly be referred to as a “masseuse.” In contrast, male massage therapists are referred to as a “masseur.” Sessions may occur privately at home, spas, chiropractic clinics, or massage parlors. The cost of each massage session may range from under a hundred dollars to hundreds of dollars.
Considerations When Choosing a Massage Chair or a Massage Therapist
Massage chairs are a long term investment. For a fixed cost, the chair can provide countless massage sessions. The chairs also provide convenience by eliminating the need to schedule appointments. Massage chairs provide massages at home whenever they are needed. In addition, consumers can usually test the product before purchase.
Massage therapists offer the benefit of personal interaction. While massage chairs are restricted to programmable options, a massage therapist can customize massages according to the client’s preference. A massage from a therapist would be significantly more individualized than from one size fits all massage chairs. Spas and resorts often implement sights and sounds that promote a relaxed setting. Massages may be offered by therapists trained in various techniques such as deep tissue, shiatsu, and hot stone. However, routine visits to a massage therapist can be expensive in the long term. Although most spas and resorts are staffed by qualified trained professionals, smaller massage parlors may not be trustworthy.
The selection between a massage chair and traditional massage therapist is dependent on individual preferences. Massage chairs can be a more convenient and cost effective alternative. However, massage chairs should not be viewed as a replacement for qualified and professional therapists. Massages are a proven method of relieving stress and tension. Anyone with chronic pain or medical conditions that can be exacerbated by physical pressure should consult a physician before receiving a massage.
