Metabolic Syndrome and Weight Loss

What is Metabolic Syndrome? Do you have symptoms of a metabolism problem that is keeping you from losing weight? Discover ways to boost metabolism and lose weight.

Dieting without results is one of the most frustrating experiences. You blame yourself and question everything you put in your mouth and every exercise you do in an effort to find out why you can’t shed the pounds like others seem to. But for a select group of people, the problem isn’t with your diet or exercise, but lies with a condition called Metabolic Syndrome.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

There are a number of factors that, when combined, make it difficult for your body to metabolize foods properly.

Dr. Phil says this is one possible explanation for dieters who still have trouble losing weight. “Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of disorders that together may be causing your body to convert too many calories into fat.” (The Ultimate Weight Solution, 255)

Determining if You Have Metabolic Syndrome

Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine when someone has a metabolic problem. Since metabolic syndrome is based on a number of factors and there is no way to directly test for the condition, doctors are reluctant to make the call. But it is important to talk to your doctor about the possibility of having this condition if you have a majority of the risk factors.

Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is more common among women and there may be a hormonal connection. This condition is most likely caused from overeating and not getting enough physical activty. A few simple tests, including blood work, will be able to give you a better idea.

  • Waist measurements are larger than 35 for women and 40 for men.
  • Blood pressure is higher than 130 over 85
  • HDL cholesterol is lower than 40 for women and 50 for men
  • Triglycerides are higher that 150
  • Blood sugar is higher than 100 after fasting

I have been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome or Insulin Resistant. My first issue is the suggestion with overeating and less activity. I saw a specialist because my calorie intake was less than 1000 and I exercised twice a day every day. My second issue is the low fat diet, this is missleading because although everyone should have a low fat diet, Low Carb intake is the key factor. Suggesting high fiber diet can encourage higher carb diet and thus more weight gain. This article does not have enough detail for such a unique and tricky diagnosis. I am making progress but consistantly educating myself and watching everthing that I put into my body.
