Low blood pressure is not as common or as serious as high blood pressure but it can still cause unpleasant and distressing symptoms.

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is a condition of physical or emotional stress. It is a measurement of the pressure exerted by the blood flow on the walls of the arteries as it get pumped around the body. In this condition not enough blood reaches all parts of the body due to lax muscles in the blood vessel walls, resulting in insufficient oxygen and nutrients reaching the brain and other vital organs.

A low blood pressure reading is having a level that is 90/60mmHg, or lower.

What causes this condition?

Fatigued adrenal glands, low blood sugar levels, stress, and standing still for long periods are all implicated in the development of hypotension. Other causes for this condition can be anemia especially due to blood loss, dehydration, diabetes, or under-active thyroid.

Signs and symptoms of low blood pressure

Some of the most common symptoms are dizziness, headaches, fainting, light headedness, reduced stamina, fatigue and weakness. Sufferers tend to need more sleep and rest than non-sufferers as their energy levels can fluctuate dramatically during the day. Other very common signs of hypotension include increased perspiration and chills, cold hands and feet due to poor circulation, and increased sensitivity to hot or cold weather.

Natural remedies that may help to treat low blood pressure

  • Diet is vitally important in successful treatment of this condition. Sufficient proteins (eggs, fish, chicken, a little red meat, nuts and seeds) with heaps of vegetables are recommended.
  • Iron and magnesium supplementation is important, as is Vitamin B Complex, with extra Vitamin B5, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and bioflavonoids.
  • A poorly functioning thyroid gland can benefit from the addition of kelp, and bee pollen can vastly improve the functioning of all the endocrine glands which are affected by this condition.
  • A good mineral supplement, such as ionic minerals, can be easily assimilated by the body.

Herbal helpers for hypotension

  • Rosemary, siberian ginseng, ginger root and ginkgo biloba can all assist in raising blood pressure.
  • Hyssop benefits the endocrine glands and raises blood pressure, especially when combined with kelp.
  • Hawthorn berries and garlic strengthen the heart and balance blood pressure.

Aromatherapy Oils can benefit low blood pressure

  • Stimulant essential oils such as rosemary, black pepper, and peppermint can be used diluted in a carrier oil and massaged into the skin.
