It is New Year's Eve. There are parties to go to. Dresses to wear. People to see. A year to say goodbye to. A year some may be happy to see go while others may be sad to see the year go. People may be looking forward to 2011 or dreading 2011. Something is stopping the celebrations this year. What could it be?
New Year's Eve Storm
A New Year's Eve storm is stopping many celebrations tonight. According to my local website, Keloland, the snow will stop tonight but the temperatures will drop below zero. Well, that's OK. We will just celebrate the New Year tomorrow instead. Not so fast. The high tomorrow is predicted to be five above and the low tomorrow night is expected to be ten degrees below zero. When will we be able to celebrate the New Year? Spring?
In South Dakota, Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 are mostly closed. I-29 is closed from Sioux Falls to Grand Forks, ND. I-90 is closed from Sioux Falls to Ellsworth Airforce Base.
While watching the Weather Channel this morning, it looked like the storm covered several states including Louisiana, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota.
New Year's Eve Cancellations
Keloland's website has something called the Closeline that shows event cancellations. I would encourage people from all over the United States to check and see if the event you want to attend is still happening.
An Old Fashioned New Year's Eve
For those stranded at home on December 31, 2010, or those unwilling to go out in the bad weather, there is always the Dick Clark Rockin' New Year's Eve to watch. What else could one possibly want to do on New Year's Eve? This is definitely a tradition. For alternatives, consider The New Year's Eve Bash on MTV or New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. There is quite a list to choose from. All you need to do is check your local listings. Grab your family and some popcorn and settle in for an old fashioned New Year's Eve.
Where to Look Before You Travel
It is definitely important to stay safe this New Year's Eve if you are in the midst of the storm. SafeTravelUSA is where I looked yesterday, December 30, 2010, to see if it was safe for my boyfriend and I to travel to a gig he was supposed to play in a town about 80 miles away. It wasn't. We stayed home. The gig got canceled. This website is awesome for my state as it has weather cameras you can click on so you can see the current conditions in a particular city. Click on your state and see what the website has to offer. Like my boyfriend keeps telling me, its better to be safe than sorry.
