New Zealand’s confidential UFO reports were released under freedom of information laws after the New Zealand Defense Force deleted names and other identifying information. Two thousand pages of documents included citizens’, military personnel’s and commercial pilots’ contained accounts about UFO encounters. Most involved mysterious lights moving in the sky. Some of the accounts had drawings of flying saucers, descriptions of aliens wearing pharaoh-like masks and alleged samples of extraterrestrial writing. Air Force Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki said the Defense Force didn’t have the resources to investigate UFO reports and wouldn’t comment on the files' contents. He told the Dominion Postthat they only gatherinformation and don't investigate or make reports they haven't substantiated.
New Zealand Releases Classified UFO Files
This North Island and South Island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean decided to release secret UFO files after the USA, UK, Denmark, Sweden and Uruguay governments made their documents public. On December 21, 2010, Chile re-established its UFO investigation Unit, CEFAA, Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos, to investigate increasing UFO sightings. Last year Chile released a video showing a UFO hovering above Chilean Navy ships.
Kaikoura, New Zealand UFO Sighting
There were two sightings of mysterious lights near this South Islandtown in December, 1978, one of which was filmed by a television news crew aboard a cargo plane. Mysterious objects reportedly simultaneously appeared on air traffic controllers' radar screens, without other aircraft flying in the area. The late former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon was very interested in the incident which made international headlines. Researchers postulated that a squid boat’s lights might have caused the phenomenon, but the case was never resolved.
Founding Director of UFO Focus New Zealand Research Network, UFOCUS NZ, Suzanne Hansen, with thirty-five years UFO research experience, studied the incident and said it was inexplicable, unidentified and unusual. Many UFO reports were rejected as being meteors, planet Venus, weather balloons, clouds’ reflections or the moon. One of the official responses to the sightings thanked people for the opportunity to look at their sketches which were returned to them. The original documents that the reports were based on remain sealed until 2080.
United States Air Force Planes Seen Near New Zealand UFO Sightings
A man, who wanted confidentiality and worked for the Transport Ministry's civil aviation division when the Kaikoura lights were sighted, said he would like to see its files. He was working at Christchurch International Airport when he saw USAF planes with unusual call signs scouting the area and believed a complete account about the lights has not been released. He said that the USAF spending three days in the area indicated something unusual was happening. Hansen stated she was frustrated by the delayed release, although she understood confidentiality reasons. UFOCUS NZ was in contact with the New Zealand Defence Force, NZDF for many years. She said it was annoying, from a research perspective, because her organization wanted to collect the Kaikoura sightings for international research. Some sightings might have been those of alien technology, which is scientifically proven to be possible.
Wellington New Zealand UFO Sighting
Jonas, who requested his surname remain anonymous, and his wife saw an unknown flying craft in the sky on July 17, 2008. He said they were drinking coffee on their veranda when they saw what looked like an unusually low flying airplane traveling by Broken Hill Road at an approximate speed of 57 to 87 miles per hour at a height of about 437 to 547 yards. When Jonas snapped the first photograph, he realized it wasn’t an airplane. It vanished after he took the third or fourth picture.
New Zealand Releasing UFO Files: Possible Ramifications
Over the years since UFO sightings were initially reported, officials maintained secrecy by offering lame excuses for the spacecrafts, including that they were natural or manmade objects, hallucinations, denying incidents or frauds. According to US and UK reports and news releases, the prevailing motive for this was they didn’t want to create public panic like the one caused when Orson Wells aired the fictional story, War of the Worlds, about a Martian invasion on October 30, 1938 did. Some people maintain that there’s evidence that humans and space aliens exchange beneficial information.
While there have been reports of alien abductions that had negative consequences, positive contact has far outweighed them and some accounts were debunked. It’s possible that aliens, like humans, have good and bad entities. Knowledge dispels fear. It’s possible that educating the public about UFOs and extraterrestrials will greatly help reduce the fear and likelihood of mass panic.
