Japanese carmaker Nissan may increase the number of their recall of Infiniti G35 sedans and coupes to 146,000 vehicles, and does not include Europe and China in their recall scheme, the Beijing-based state media said on Thursday (May 06, 2010).
As the event of Toyota recall is still testing consumer confidence, Nissan announced yesterday a recall of 134,215 Infiniti G35 sedans from model years 2005-2006 and G35 coupes from model years 2005-2007 due to faulty airbags. They fear that the airbags might fail to deploy thanks to faulty seatbelt and occupancy sensors, which could cause airbag failure during a car crash.
But Nissan China said the total number of the recall might increase to 146,000, said the Beijing News on Thursday (May 06, 2010).
Nissan Cars Recall does not Cover Europe and China Market
Nissan China said that they would not include Europe and China in their recall scheme. “Our recall only affects the 2005-07 model G35 coupes and 2005-06 model G35 sedans. But we did not sold G35 coupes and sedans in the Chinese market until 2007 and the recall models did not sell in the market through official channel,” said an executive of Nissan China who kept his name anonymous, as quoted by the Beijing News on Thursday (May 06, 2010).
The Nissan China executive added that the recall would not cover Europe too, according to the Beijing News.
Vehicle Recalls Pale in China
The Chinese government and consumer associations have not confirmed the explanation from the Nissan China yet. But vehicle recall in China, the world biggest automobile market, usually pales in comparison to the recalls in the other parts of the world like the United States. This is partly because Chinese consumers are not protected enough by the local laws system and automakers can easily get out of the troubles like recall events. For example, Toyota recall in China came much more slowly than the recall of 5.3 million cars in the United States.
But the slow response may damage customer confidence, which may cause relatively slow growth. The passenger car market in China grew 48 percent in 2009, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). But Toyota's sales grew 21 percent in the same period.
Nissan Vehicle Recall Reach 686,000 Units in 2010
This is just the latest in a long line of recalls this year. Though Nissan’s recall is smaller than another Japanese automaker Toyota’s, the total number will soon reach 686,000 units. Nissan recalled earlier this year over 540,000 automobiles, which cover Nissan Titans, Pathfinders, Xterras, Armadas, Frontier trucks, and Infiniti QX56s over the concerns about brakes and fuel gauge problems.
