Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee states have criteria for rebates under the Obama Stimulus plan Cash for clunker appliances.

Cash for clunker appliances will begin in Spring 2010 in states such as Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee. These states have determined their own eligibility requirements when determining which appliances will be eligible to receive a rebate through the cash for clunkers program.

Pennsylvania Appliance Rebates

Pennsylvania will begin their program in April 2010. Residents will reserve their rebates in April before purchasing the non-electric Energy Star qualified and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will end when all funds are depleted.

Pennsylvania eligible products include:

  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Oil furnaces
  • Gas furnaces
  • Oil boilers
  • Gas boilers

Pennsylvania encourages residents to recycle their clunker appliances.

Total funding for Pennsylvania is $11,944,000.

Rhode Island Appliance Rebates

Rhode Island will implement a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace inefficient appliances and home heating systems with Energy Star rated and other ultra-efficient models. Some heating products that fall outside the Energy Star rating scope will also be included for eligibility. The program for refrigerators, freezers, and dishwashers will begin in February 2010. Other product rebates will begin in March 2010. The program will continue until funds are depleted.

Rhode Island eligible products include:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Dishwashers
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Gas furnaces
  • Gas boilers
  • Combined high efficiency boilers and water heaters
  • Indirect water heaters

Rhode Island encourages residents to recycle clunker appliances.

Total funding for Rhode Island is $1,008,000.

South Carolina Appliance Rebates

South Carolina will implement a rebate program for the purchase of Energy Star qualified and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will begin on March 31, 2010 and will end when funds are exhausted.

Instant rebates for refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, and room air conditioners are available at participating retailers. "Pre-qualified" contractors will give their customers a mail-in rebate application for water heaters, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment.

South Carolina eligible products include:

  • Refrigerators
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Room air conditioners
  • Gas condensing water heaters
  • High-efficiency gas storage water heaters
  • High-performance gas storage water heaters
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Electric heat pump water heaters
  • Solar water heaters
  • Gas furnaces
  • Central air conditioners
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Geothermal heat pumps

South Carolina encourages recycling of all old appliances.

Total funding for South Carolina is $4,298,000.

South Dakota Appliance Rebates

South Dakota will use a mail-in rebate program to help people purchase Energy Star rated appliances. Rebates will be available in March 2010 and will continue until funds are exhausted.

South Dakota eligible products include:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Gas condensing water heaters
  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Electric heat pump water heaters
  • Solar water heaters (electric and gas backup)

One rebate per product per household. Applications must be submitted within 30 days of the purchase. Proof of recycling of clunker refrigerators and freezers is required to get a rebate for the new unit. Residents must "self-certify" the new appliance replaces old ones.

Total funding for South Dakota is $772,000.

Tennessee Appliance Rebates

Tennessee will partner with the Tennessee Valley Authority's Energy Right program to provide financial incentives for the cash for clunker appliances program. This mail-in rebate program will begin in April 2010, and will continue until funds are exhausted.

Tennessee eligible products include:

  • Room air conditioners
  • Central air conditioners
  • Air source heat pumps

Tennessee encourages residents to recycle their clunker room air conditioners.

Total funding for Tennessee is $5,963,000.
