Any poker player worth his salt can tell you the virtues of playing tight early in a tournament, but as a tournament goes along some level of aggression is needed. When designing poker bots, it is often difficult to find this balance, as many bots fail to take into account the tendencies of players in the game, particularly in open online poker rooms, where the turnover rate can be as little as 10 minutes on average. In these situations, several different variations of mirroring strategy can be quite effective.

The first strategy requires relatively little programming expertise and generally has little trouble breaking even. It can be an effective method for "house bots", whose purpose is just to break even on bets made, relying only on increasing the overall rake from actual customers in order to make a profit. Studies have shown that simply programming the bot to mirror the statistical average of all players' bet/fold and bet amount patterns from a weeks' time frame is an effective way to break even. The amount of data involved may seem quite large, but since most online poker sites keep detailed stats on every table anyway, programming a bot to follow such patterns actually takes relatively little work.

Another popular approach is to mimic the strategy of only the best players on a site. There are several strengths to this method. First, designing more detailed strategies that mimic successful players, while requiring a significant workload for the programmer, gives the bot a much higher chance of actually turning a profit. In addition, since the best players often rely on a certain element of unpredictability to confuse their opponents, these bots are harder to spot and produce more "random" play. This is turn is likely to induce far more folds from opponents than a more traditional bot, a very effective way of increasing the overall profit.

Perhaps the best method discovered thus far for producing profits on bots without undertaking too great a risk is to lay a "foundation" of simple-mirror bots while keeping an upper-echelon group of superior expert bots as well. A good suggestion is to have 70-80% simple bots and 20-30% expert bots, and to deploy them in this way: put your expert bots on intermediate tables, and your simple bots on beginner tables. Studies have shown that placing any bots on high-level tables exponentially increases the chance of losing money. While the simple bots will more than hold their own against beginners, increasing the total bet amount and insuring against the losses of the experts, the expert bots will "clean house" against intermediate players, who tend to overestimate their abilities and are more willing to make risky bets in the hope of a big payoff. Try this strategy today, and see if it doesn't produce better results from your bots.
