Samantha Cameron (39) gave birth to her fourth child, a daughter, at the Royal Cornwall Hospital on Tuesday 24th August while on holiday in Cornwall.

The baby was born by Cesarean Section and weighed 6lbs2 oz (2.7kg)

David Cameron said on BBC Radio Cornwall, ‘We are absolutely thrilled. She is an unbelievably beautiful girl. I am a very proud Dad. Both baby and Mum seem to be doing very well.’

Baby daughter born while Camerons on holiday

The Camerons ,who were on holiday in south-west England with their children Nancy (6) and Arthur (4), did not expect the new baby until next month.

The Prime Minister said to waiting journalists that they had decided to go to the hospital after his wife had gone into labour on Tuesday morning.

He said, ‘It was very exciting, we were on holiday, thought we were going to get through the holiday and then have a baby, and then it just seemed to kick off a bit quickly. ‘

David Cameron thanked the doctors and nurses who had looked after his wife at the hospital and said that his role had been to make the tea and toast.

The Cameron’s older son, Ivan, was born severely disabled and died in February 2009 aged 6.

David and Samantha Cameron picking name for new baby daughter

Bets are already being taken as to the name of the new addition to the Prime Minister’s family. Ladbrookes are offering odds of 12/1 that the Camerons choose Lucy or Daisy, Elizabeth is at 16/1 and Juliet at 20/1. Coalition supporters suggest Nicky, after Nick Clegg, the Lib-Dem Deputy Prime Minister, at 25/1 while Harriet, after the interim leader of the Labour Party is at 250/1. Long shots are Beyonce at 500/1 or Cammy Cameron at 1000/1.

David Cameron said that they were in the process of picking names and that one name could have a link with Cornwall. ‘I think we will have to have something Cornish in the middle,‘ he said.

He went on to add that the other two children, Nancy and Arthur, were bouncing up and down and dying to say hello to the new baby.

Only second baby born to Prime Minister in office

The baby is only the second in over 150 years to be born into a serving Prime Minister’s family, the previous one being Leo, born to Cherie Blair, wife of Tony Blair in May 2000, while her husband was Prime Minister.

David Cameron has said he will be taking paternity leave to which he is entitled, but when that will begin has still to be sorted out. Meantime, Nick Clegg will continue to oversee government business. Both he and Labour MP David Miliband offered their congratulations to the Prime Minister and his wife.
