Runes of Magic (or RoM) has an open PvP (player versus player) server modes, those that will allow relatively anyone to be attacked and to attack in return.
This article is for those that are in a PvP server world and not a PvE (player versus environment) server world. Those that are in the PvE worlds are going to only be able to duel each other after both of the characters have flagged themselves ready for a PK (player kill) match.
PvP in PvE Servers
In the PvE servers (player versus environment) the only PvP gameplay that is available in Runes of Magic is duels. Both characters will need to be flagged for PvP play to have a duel. One cannot flag themselves PvP and kill random NPCs in towns like other MMORPG games, just other players once they are flagged for PvP as well. The rules of normal Player versus Player game play are not going to apply on a PvE server.
Activating PvP in RoM
To enable the character to be able to flag them for PvP game play, they will have to go to Varanas and do the PK quest. This will also require the character to be at least a level 15 to do the quest and to then be able to flag themselves PvP ready. Those that have not done the quest or reached the required level will be unable to engage in any PvP duels.
PvP Reputation in Runes of Magic
Characters in Runes of Magic can be good, evil, or neutral based on their reputation obtained through battles. They will start out good and can get to be evil if they obtain negative reputation or they can become a hero by gaining more positive reputation throughout the game play.
Guards to the city will attack the player if they become too evil in the guard’s eyes, to keep them out of their city. To tell how good or evil the characters are, check the stats or the color of the name of the character. The colors will change as the character gets good or evil.
PvP Name Colors
There are three categories of reputation; there are evil, normal, and good. The color of the name will fall in the range of these three reputation categories. Killing those for a good cause or notoriously evil characters will make you gain reputation.
- White Names – These are pure normal characters. There are no kills needed and they have a reputation of -30 to 30.
- Yellow Names – These are starting evil characters. There are 3 kills needed and they have a reputation of -30 to -90.
- Orange Names – These are mid range evil characters. There are 6 kills needed and they have a reputation of -90 to -150.
- Red Names – These are true evil characters. There are 12 kills needed and they have a reputation of -150 or more.
- Light Blue Names – These are starting good characters. They need 20 kills and have a reputation of 30 to 90.
- Blue Names – These are mid range evil characters. They need 70 kills and have a reputation of 90 to 150.
- Purple Names – These are pure good characters. They need 120 kills and have a reputation of over 150.
Basic Rules of PvP
According to the Runes of Magic website, these are the basic rules of PvP play:
- Characters below level 15 can not be attacked when they haven’t flagged themselves PK (PvP).
- It is not possible to fight in houses or instances.
- Patrolling guards will kill any “red name” players (characters with a reputation of -150 or less) on sight. There are patrols in all the major cities.
- Characters will not drop loot drop when the attacker is 10 levels higher or lower than the attacked character.
- Only “red name” characters can attack patrolling NPCs.
- Items dropped by characters are randomly picked from all equipment – on the body and in the backpack. Items acquired in the Item Shop are excluded and will not be dropped when defeated.
