Pleas to Dolphin Base in Japan requesting assistance for a sick dolphin affectionately named Jiyu have failed. Sources believe Jiyu was slaughtered.

Nov. 09, 2011. Cove Monitors and Guardians for both Save Japan Dolphins (SJD) and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) are reporting that despite a global and ardent social media campaign, a bottlenose dolphin, who captured the hearts of international dolphin activists, is believed to have been killed. Meanwhile, messages posted online by Dolphin Resort, appear to directly threaten activists on the ground in Taiji.

Dolphin develops neurotic behaviors

Rosie Kunneke, the lead Cove Guardian with SSCS in Taiji, spotted the sick dolphin several weeks ago where he was being held in a sea pen at Dolphin Base, Japan. Captured from the ocean during one of Taiji's grueling dolphin drives, Jiyu, (as named by Kunneke and meaning freedom in Japanese), was earmarked for captivity sources say, by Japan's, Dolphin Resort.

The dolphin first drew Kunneke's attention after he was observed displaying signs of distress and neurosis. Having been separated from his pod, Jiyu's anxiety was palpable as the bottlenose began to spyhop repeatedly. After receiving an injection of what Kunneke suspects was a sedative, Jiyu, Kunneke said, "Appeared calmer and did not spyhop as often." Yet despite the dolphin's sedated appearance, the Cove Guardian observed that Jiyu always kept his distance from trainers, refusing to interact with them and taking himself to the corner of his pen at feeding times.

Trainers ignore Jiyu say observers

At some point, says Kunneke, Jiyu was moved to another pen and observers lost sight of the bottlenose for a couple of days. When he was finally relocated in another sea pen, Sea Shepherd Guardians and SJD Cove Monitors were appalled by his condition and behavior. Heather Hill with SJD, reported that Jiyu was spyhopping repetitively every 15 seconds or so. Photographs taken by Hill, appear to show Jiyu emaciated to the point where his skeleton can clearly be seen.

He even refused to be stirred by the presence of fellow captive dolphins, Hill says. "If the other dolphins in the pen got too close, which they often did," she added, "[...] he'd simply drift over to another corner and continue spyhopping."

Jiyu, adds Hill, was completely ignored by the trainers at feeding time and was offered neither food or medical treatment. Kunneke later reported that she approached a man believed to be the owner of Dolphin Resort and politely asked in Japanese for freedom for Jiyu. "He just nodded his head and walked off," Kunneke said. Later when a fisherman actively involved in the dolphin slaughtering approached the pen, the SSCS Guardian suspected that Jiyu's fate had already been determined. The man after spotting Kunneke observing him, rapidly retreated; Kunneke remained near Jiyu and maintained visual contact with him until after dark.

Activists issue a call to action

Alarmed by both the dolphin's demeanor and his potential fate, Kunneke, along with SJD Monitors Leah Lemieux and Heather Hill, issued a call to action across social media platforms and asked supporters to email or telephone Dolphin Resort/Dolphin Base, to request that Jiyu receive, "Qualified veterinary assistance or assisted release with rehabilitation." Yet despite a slew of international calls and emails to both entities – the calls went unanswered. Now activists believe that Jiyu was slaughtered.

"We cannot see Jiyu anywhere," said Kunneke, "I saw a dolphin killer here yesterday and when we arrived here earlier, there was a dolphin killer hanging around. We suspect that Jiyu was killed."

Dolphin resort issues threats

Dolphin Resort it appears, is clearly going on the defensive. Visiting the official website for Dolphinresort.co.jp now redirects to a Japanese blog with the following message. "To anybody coming to Taiji as an activist, this website is only intended to be a warning. The message is simple. We know who you are, so behave yourself in Japan." Furthermore they write, in a posted Statement to Foreign Readers, "As long as activists put fishermen's faces on blogs, facebook, and youtube without their permission, we do the same for you."

The blog, which is hosted by someone calling themselves Pngtaiji, goes on to suggest that if concerned parties are "Really serious about requesting the Dolphin Base to release the dolphin, you should officially negotiate with the Dolphin Base, with Japanese translator/lawyer, and offer them the price of the dolphin, food, and expenses for releasing the dolphin." Pngtaiji then adds that, "The price of a dolphin is $300,000 according to Ric O'Barry's most recent comment. So suggest you to start collecting money."

Heather Hill told Suite101.com earlier this evening, "As we suspected, the dolphin killers returned and killed Jiyu either sometime last night or this morning. Hope he can find his peace now ..."

Pngtaiji meanwhile, asserts that the dolphin was receiving care, "Live dolphins makes money for such a facility, not the dead ones. Losing dolphins means big loss," they say, but claim to be "not related to Dolphin Base." Suite101.com did contact Pngtaiji about the whereabouts of Jiyu, and was told, "The dolphin is in good hands," but they would not confirm whether the dolphin had been moved or if he was still alive.

Japanese mafia involved?

Certainly tension is increasing all around for activists in Japan. Lauren Williams of Australia's Daily Telegraph, is reporting claims that Japanese "Yakuza" gangsters have launched a campaign of intimidation to force a media blackout on the furore surrounding the country's killing of dolphins and whales. Yazuka organizations are members of traditional organized crime syndicates in Japan prevalent in the Japanese media. Called "boryokudan," by the Japanese police, the term literally means, 'violence group.' In Japan, writes Anthony Bruno of Trutv.com, "There are 110,000 active members divided into 2,500 families," with influence that extends into the USA.

Readers can watch Heather Hill's video report on Jiyu; Hill is a volunteer for the Wild Dolphin Foundation, an Hawaii-based NPO, and the author of My Porpoise Driven Life. She is currently on location in Taiji for Save Japan Dolphins with Leah Lemieux. Rosie Kunneke is on location in Taiji for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. For further information on the dolphin drives in Taiji and how to get involved, visit Save Japan Dolphins.org or follow Kunneke's reports from Taiji at Sea Shepherd.org. Although, Jiyu's sex could not be determined, Suite101.com used "he" for clarity purposes.

Hard to believe a so called modern society can deliberately slaughter hundreds of intellegent creatures for profit

There's huge misunderstandings on this particular dolphin. He's been moved to another facility to receive better treatment during the night. Furthermore the price of a bottlenose dolphin is not $300,000 but merely $8,000 in Taiji.

My deep hope is that Jiyu's story will become a true example of how extremely important it'd be for captured dolphins to receive medical care and attention when they appear to be distressed physically and psychologically. It was incredibly obvious from all the photos and videos of Jiyu that he was extremely distressed not only physically, but psychologically. He was probably very easily stressed during the capture and was in complete shock as a result.

I must admit that I am so very deeply disappointed that our pleas - via calls, e-mails, and faxes - for Jiyu went unheard. I thought that Misty - one of the captured dolphins that lived in an extremely filthy, algae-laden above-ground pool last year - would set the example for the other ill dolphins to receive attention once Dolphin Base hears from so many of us asking for help for these dolphins. I really thought that Jiyu was going to get the help just like Misty did. I could not have been more wrong. *heavy sigh*

Jiyu was probably slaughtered sometime during the night when no one was around to witness such atrocity. I am so deeply disturbed about this. I would have felt so much better if Jiyu had been humanely euthanized if he had absolutely no chance to get better after being examined by a certified cetacean/animal veterinarian instead of being 'slaughtered' by the hunter-killers! I - like so many others - had been trying to receive help for Jiyu and the other ill dolphins. I made a number of posts on my Advocates Against Cetacean Cruelty Facebook group page concerning beloved Jiyu and his pod-mates. Link: http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/128160793932305/

Rest in peace, dearest Jiyu. You and oh, so many other most affected dolphins will always live in our thoughts and hearts. You are now free and no longer suffering in the hands of the most evil humans on Earth - the dolphin hunter-killers and trainers! We will always remember you for a very long time! LAURICE

So so sad. If there is a bright side to all of this it's that Jiyu is no longer suffering and will not have to endure his future life in captivity. This just highlights the cruelty of the captive industry and makes it even more vital that we all spread the word to everyone we know to not support this evil trade by boycotting aquariums and dolphinariums around the world. RIP Jiyu, wherever you are now may you be at peace, find your family (who were probably slaughtered in Taiji at the time of capture) and swim free forever more.

Words cannot describe my revulsion at this barbarism. And while this is going on, thousands of dolphins are dying in Mexican tuna nets. We are a crazy, brutal species that kills without want.

Observe their over-proud reasoning for allowing this good being to suffer for so long. They were asked to release it but a remarkable level of selfishness and superiority kept them from admitting defeat and doing the right thing. To hide the shame, they did their dirty deed by dark.
In dealing with this type of behavior, do not expect a level of spiritual awareness above a self absorbed 2 yr old. They were brought up without being taught respect for animal life, other than nature is to be conquered. That is how it is there. They remain steadfast in the notion that these are merely fish with blowholes...but worth big money to others. Thus the unbelievably cruel exploitation.

It is a heart-breaking news. So sad for Jiyu. Boycotting aquariums is probably the best way to stop this cruelty.

On the Dolphin Base website someone asked about Jiyu today and their answer was that the dolphin is in good hands...now here I read about the dolphin been moved to another facility...So is there a chance Jiyu is still alive?
Nov 10, 2011 10:53 AM
Elizabeth Batt :
Yes, it was myself that asked and I have amended the article to show the response. I have requested proof of Jiyu's current place of containment and where he was moved to. I have not yet received anything but I am unsure why a dolphin would be moved in the middle of the night? Furthermore, considering the outrage at the treatment of Jiyu, surely publicizing his transfer and care could only benefit and support the claims of care? Sadly, I believe that the only good hands currently nurturing Jiyu, are of an otherworldly kind. I'll be happy to publish evidence contradicting my statement however.

If Jiyu was moved, then why did a dolphin killer show up at the pens in the night, wearing a wetsuit? Because only the dolphin fisherman has permits to kill dolphins. If Jiyu was moved then why didn't the dolphin trainers move him? No, cause they killed him. And there's video of the dolphin killer arriving in a wetsuit. Dolphin Base should show proof if he is still alive. And the trainers should feel ashamed, I mean any one can see Jiyu is underweight, You can see his skeleton for goodness sake.

Thank you for updating us on this story. I personally, would like to know one way or another what has happened to this animal. What continues to happen in Taiji should be an embarrassment for this Country. I welcome a day when profit no longer trumps humanity in its dealing with wildlife and the treatment of these wild creatures in our Oceans.

I do believe the call for media action is working, I have posted on the Dolphin Base and they are clearly responding to the onslaught of messages they are getting. They are becoming extremely defensive which is a strong sign that they are getting the message..... Now they should just prove to the entire World that they have moved this dolphin and it is getting proper treatment by releasing video of it or showing proof in another form..... But, I am sure they won't. Peace to the activists for doing what needs to be done.

How can the world allow this? If there is anything we can really do, somebody please let me know and I'll drop everything else to do it. To cause so much grief and upset to so many people is almost as cruel to what they do to dolphins.

I think the Japanese are messed up. Yes I said it. How come nobody in Japan is doing anything about this? Culture, tradition, blah, blah, blah. They won't be happy until they kill everything in the ocean. Whales, Dolphin, Bluefin Tuna. It makes me sick. Our government (The U.S.) is too scared to put their foot down because they don't want to interrupt or disturb trade agreements and don't want to "offend" anybody. They kill the Dolphins because they eat fish and that means less fish to catch. Our own ignorance will be the death of Humankind and apparently we plan on taking everything else with us.

In ways I agree with the other guest about "Providing aid after the Tsunami" but on the other hand, look at the us. We in the US still ship horses to slaughter in Canada and Mexico, there are still dog and chicken fighting rings. There are puppy mills, and animals of all kinds are left to sit out in the elements with no care or food if they are deformed. Left to die. The US, or any other country for that matter is no better than Japan. Do I think its wrong, you bet your ass I do, but until the GOVERNMENT puts a stop to it, it will be allowed to go on because most people dont know its happening. Even if we tired to stop it, we have no voice, we are NOT a free country.

I am helpin in any way i could. I am not an activist but i help in other ways through donations, signing petitions etc. This COVE is very upsetting. These poor dolphins are enduring so much suffering. This is the thanks they get for saving humans lives. So to all activists and animal lovers keep up the good work and lets never give up on these intelligent beings of the sea. One question Will this cove ever be shut down?? AND WHEN??
Nov 15, 2011 2:22 PM
Elizabeth Batt :
You are an activist, you don't have to be on the ground in Taiji for that :) Your efforts I'm certain, are very much appreciated. The situation is getting interesting over there and developments lead me to believe that events in the cove are very much under threat, hence the step-up in security by the town of Taiji, and the threats being issued from more unsavory quarters. They are feeling the pressure.

Mr. Obarry once said a fisherman told him if the world found out about the slaughter in the cove they would be shut down. My question is the world does known about the cove. So why is the cove still active?? And will this senseless slaughter ever end?? Please reply back.
Nov 16, 2011 8:03 PM
Elizabeth Batt :
Unfortunately the world doesn't know about the cove and many choose to ignore what goes on there. You'd be surprised by how many people have not heard of what happens there. The Cove movie is very powerful, but if people won't watch it, they can't truly appreciate the brutality. Money talks, governments of other nations condemn but often refuse to get actively involved. Again, my personal opinion is that if everyone actually watched the movie, it would speak for itself. Pressure is building, increased security presence and the possibility of the Japanese mafia now being involved, tells me Taiji is feeling the threat. Mindsets are not changed overnight unfortunately, but I believe they will be changed.

Its extremely heartbreaking of how thier being treated by these low lifes TRAINERS AND FISHERMAN. Your day will come EVIL COVE and when it does look out. I am literally on my knees praying for these poor creatures. I askin God to touch one of the fishermans heart. I dont want to hate these men cause i feel they were raise to do this. Thier parents most likely and grandparents and thier parents after them did drive hunts for decades. I am hopeing that that one of them become a Mr. Ishii. He slaughter dolphins for years until one day he saw a tear in the dolphins eyes. That was a big turn around for him. Futo Japan no longer drive hunts. And they did drive hunts alot longer than Taiji. So i have to keep the faith that one day the slaughter will end. Unfortunately its not going to happen overnite it will take some time. But we all must keep the faith and just keep fighting for these intelligent beings. GOD WILL NOT LET US DOWN OR THE DOLPHINS!! Diane Lombardi

To Elizabeth Batt: When the dolphins are driven into the cove and thier kept there overnite, do you think they sense that they will be killed? They are highly intelligent beings and i always wonder about that. Please reply back. It will be greatly appreciated.
Nov 22, 2011 6:46 PM
Elizabeth Batt :
This season they haven't been keeping them in the cove overnight. As soon as they are driven in they are being slaughtered, usually in less than an hour. I believe this is because they don't wish those monitoring activities on the ground to capture extra footage of the dolphins. Yesterday was a tough one, they caught some striped dolphins. They panic in shallow water and threw themselves onto the rocks to escape. They killed 8-9 of them. Even if they did let them calm down from the drive, yes they would sadly know, because they are all together when they are killed. Visit SaveJapanDolphins.org for more information, they have updated blogs on events, as does Seashepherd.org.

Why do the fisherman go to great lenghts to hide the slaughter? Do they feel what thier doing is wrong? Or are they ashame of what thier doing? I would think if its thier so called culture they claim or thier tradition then why hide from the public?? Please reply back. Thank You!!

Well they know that having been revealed to the world, it brings unwanted attention. I think they also believe that if we can't see it, it isn't happening. They do say they are proud of their traditions, and they don't want to seem to change them. As the world moves on, Taiji remains in the past.

Thank you Heather and Elizabeth, Cove Guardians, Sea Shepard for filming Jiyu to let the world know the dark side of Taiji and how they treat these dolphins. All the more reason this cruelty needs to be stopped. These poor creatures are suffering enough, in the hands of these GREEDY HEARTLESS MEN THAT WE CALL HUMANS!! WHAT A JOKE TAIJI IS!!! Taiji the dolphins blood are on your hands. People who swam in the cove all said the same thing, HOW ERIEE AND CREEPY IT FELT!!
