When learning meditation, one of the best techniques to learn is a form of self-awareness that Buddha referred to as mindfulness. When learned, this can help a person to achieve a deeper form of meditation.
Mindfulness can aid in increasing one's awareness. while allowing for relaxation of the mind and body, thereby reducing stress,
What does Mindfulness Meditation do?
Mindfulness meditation permits for one to be in the moment, versus thinking about other things. By clearing the mind, a person can become more aware and focused. In addition, mindfulness can help increase a person's concentration.
An Example of Mindfulness
Here's an example of mindfulness involving awareness and concentration. Person number one reaches for a peach, turns on their MP 3 player, and begins to read the newspaper. With three different things going on, how much can person number one concentrate on any one of these actions?
Person number two also reaches for a peach, but, instead of doing other things, focuses only on the peach. First the person notices the color of the peach. Next, the individual observes the fuzzy texture of the peach. When taking a bite, care is taken to enjoy the smell of the peach while listening to the crisp sound of the first bite. Finally, the person is aware of explosion of taste when the bite reaches the inside of the mouth.
This is what mindfulness does. It allows for complete concentration for the moment at hand. For meditation, it lets a person focus only on the breath, shielding out other thoughts which can cause distraction. By quieting the mind, the body will relax as well.
Meditation Technique of Mindfulness Meditation
The two most important factors for a successful meditation are breathing and posture. The back needs to be kept straight to allow for the proper flow of energy. The most common way to meditate is while sitting. Once seated, keeping the eyes closed, begin to take deep, relaxing breaths.
Try to keep the mind clear, only concentrating on the breath. This can be challenging in the beginning because most people are used to a flood of thoughts continuously going through their minds. If other thoughts creep in, just let them go.
Keep taking deep breaths without thinking of anything else. This will take some practice, but, in time, it will become much easier. Continue to do this until feeling relaxed. It's OK to start with shorter sessions, then increase as time goes on. When finished, come out of the meditation and rest for a few minutes before getting up.
Mindfulness meditation not only grants a way to clear to mind, increase awareness, and provide for relaxation, it also acts as a stepping stone for deeper meditation. Besides allowing a person to be in the moment, mindfulness meditation can also lead to healing, deeper spirituality, and an overall better focus in life.
