At #4 on the Travel Channel’s “Top Ten Beaches”, Lovers Key State Park doesn’t disappoint. Smooth white sand, clear blue waters and stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico are just the beginning. Young and old, alone or in groups, Lovers Key State Park has something for everyone. Located just a few miles south of the popular Ft. Myers Beach, this secluded paradise, for years only accessible by boat, is worth the trip.
Activities for Beach Lovers
For those looking for refreshing cool waters and tranquil surroundings, Lovers Key is the place to be. Its natural beauty makes it a popular romantic getaway, but this beach is not just for couples. Calm waters on 2.5 miles of pristine beach make Lovers Key an ideal spot for wading and swimming, even with small children. A day at the beach may include a picnic at the gazebo, building sand castles, collecting shells or just laying in the sun with a cold beverage and a magnificent view.
Activities for Nature Lovers
As a wildlife preserve, Lovers Key provides opportunities to observe nature up close and personal. Considered one of the finest birding areas in Southwest Florida, Lovers Key is home to many bird species including the Osprey, Bald Eagle, Snowy Egrets, and American Kestrel. Bottlenose Dolphins and manatees may also be seen swimming in the bay. Over eight miles of hiking area, including the 2.5-mile Black Island Trail, provides plenty of area to leisurely observe and explore nature in all its splendor.
Activities for Sports Lovers
More athletic visitors to Lovers Key State Park will find several activities to keep them entertained. Five miles of bike trail wind through the park offering scenic points of interest. Bring your own bicycle or rent one at the Visitor Center. Use a trail guide to map a route and stay on course.
For those who prefer staying in the water, there are canoe and kayak rentals available at the Visitor Center as well. Paddle through the tidal lagoons and canals among the peaceful mangroves or head out to the Gulf to bask in the full Florida sunshine. Take in the sights and sounds of nature on a winding adventure through the Estero Bay.
A boat ramp is available on Estero Bay for those visitors who wish to extend the adventure out into the gulf. Fishing opportunities include seasonal trout, tarpon, and more. Castnetting for mullet in the bay is also a popular activity at Lovers Key.
The Key to a Great Day at the Beach
Any successful trip to the beach involves a little planning. Lovers Key State Park is open 365 days a year from 8:00 a.m. to sundown. The costs include a small parking fee and any equipment rental or food purchases. Be sure to pack sun screen and the appropriate gear for any activities such as biking or canoeing and plan to keep children close. This eco-friendly wildlife preserve has some areas that are not safe for unsupervised children.
