With all of the closet organizers, storage containers, baskets, bins, and hangers to store your clothes, shoes and accessories, closet organizing should be an easy task. So why isn't it? Before deciding what to buy, HDTV.com suggests you ask yourself, "How frequently will this be used and how easy should it be to access?"
Create Four Piles of Clothes and Shoes
According to Good Housekeeping.com, the first step to organizing a closet is to make sure that you're wearing all of the clothes. Each year, empty the closet entirely and try on each dress, skirt, shirt and pair of jeans and shoes to see if they fit, need cleaning or mending, and will be worn again.
The first and second piles are for clothes to keep. The in-season clothes will go back into the closet, while the out of season clothes can be stored away in a different part of the room or house. The third pile is for clothes that need cleaning or mending and the fourth pile is for items to donate.
Create a Storage System
Once you know what clothes are going back into your closet, measure the closet space to decide what storage systems, boxes, bins or baskets to purchase. When selecting a storage system, consider how many dresses and suits you have compared to jackets, shirts and skirts to determine how much vertical space you need.
Each Dress on the Right Hanger
Organize clothes in whatever way suits the closet space and your personal style. Some people create separate groupings of dresses, skirts, jeans, shirts, and blazers. Others prefer to store clothes and accessories according to outfit.
For instance, match a sweater with the jeans, skirt and scarf it's worn with, rather than by clothing type. You can also organize clothes according to season, color and how often they're worn. A handy tip to keep track of when a dress is worn is to change the direction of the hanger after wearing.
Store Jeans on Hangers or on Shelves
Avoid putting jeans, shirts and sweaters in drawers so they won't be hidden away and forgotten. Keep undergarments, socks and some accessories and jewelry in drawers. Purchase transparent storage boxes and bins to place on the closet floor and on higher shelves for easy identifying.
By keeping only the clothes you wear, assessing your closet space, and purchasing storage units, bins and containers, your closet can store every dress, pair of jeans, shoes and accessories so that figuring out what to wear each morning will be both easy and fun.
