The Toronto International Film Festival joins the Toronto Entertainment District to show free movies every Wednesday night in Metro Square.

This summer, the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and the Toronto Entertainment District are getting together to screen free movies every Wednesday night, from June 30 to September 1st. Don’t miss this opportunity to see great movies on the big screen, free of charge.

The program includes films for the whole family. Participating Entertainment District restaurants are offering special Summer Movie Night Menus to celebrate the event, and a unique CN Tower light show will signal the start of each movie night.

Screenings begin at 9 p.m. in Metro Square, located next to Roy Thomson Hall. Here is the current film line-up:

Cairo Time

  • Show Date: August 11, 2010.
  • Running Time: 90 minutes.
  • Rating: PG.
  • Synopsis: Set against the backdrop of Cairo and the Nile, this romantic drama centers around Juliette, a Canadian magazine editor who comes to Egypt to meet up with her husband, and ends up falling in love with the friend he sends to watch over her while she awaits his arrival. Cairo Time won the Best Canadian Feature Film Award at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Director Rubba Nadda will be in attendance at the screening.

Silent Film Showcase

  • Show Date: August 18, 2010.
  • Running Time: Not available.
  • Rating: Unrated.
  • Synopsis: The screening features director Guy Maddin’s short homage to the silent film era, The Heart of the World – produced for TIFF 2000 – as well as a collection of classics from the silent film era including Cops and Fatty at Coney Island and the first filmed version Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice in Wonderland. This screening will be accompanied by a musical score performed by a live orchestra.

Dragon Hunters

  • Show Date: August 25, 2010.
  • Running Time: 80 minutes.
  • Rating: PG – Family screening, recommended for ages 7 and up.
  • Synopsis:This animated film follows the adventures of young Zoe, as she goes in search of heroes who can help her and her uncle get rid of a terrible dragon. Dragon Hunters was a hit at the Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children.

Casablanca

  • Show Date: September 1, 2010.
  • Running Time: 102 minutes.
  • Rating: PG.
  • Synopsis: This classic of American cinema was directed by Michael Curtiz and stars Humphrey Bogart as the legendary owner of Rick’s Café, and Ingrid Bergman as his lost love, Ilsa. The film, which follows the adventures of a group of expats, freedom fighters and underground rebel leaders hiding in Casablanca during World War II, is a cinematic masterpiece and a timeless story of love and friendship sure to delight modern audiences.
