Long dark winters can get you down, but whether you are feeling really depressed or just a bit low, here are some hints to perk yourself up until spring.

From time to time everybody feels unhappy and even depressed but the art of happiness really is a state of mind and a thought process that can help you stay balanced healthy and achieve what you want to achieve. Here are eight handy hints on achieving happiness and making the most out of your life.

Learn to Like Yourself

You are not so bad! Wash your face and hands, clean your teeth, brush your hair and put on some nice clothes. Realise that you are you, it does not matter where you come from or who your parents are. So many people blame their upbringing on their poor state of mind when in fact they should be using it to develop their strength of character.

Become Your Own Bestie

If no-one comes to see you or calls, does it bother you? If the answer is yes, then it is essential that you teach yourself to like your own company. Remember you come in alone and you go out alone and there will almost certainly be at least one stage in your life when you will be on your own. Think of the positive side, you can watch the TV programmes you like, read that book you have been meaning to read or take up a new hobby. The only way you can learn to appreciate your own company is to spend some time with yourself.

Get Yourself Healthy

Take regular exercise and eat properly. Don’t just talk about going on that diet, do it. You will feel so much better for it. Aim to exercise for an hour a day if you can, if you have a dog, take it for a good walk every day.

Don’t Criticise Yourself too Much

If you screw things up don’t beat yourself up – everyone makes mistakes and says the wrong thing occasionally. It is likely that most people will not even remember it tomorrow or next week.

Make a List

Make a list of ten really positive good things in your life however small. If you can’t think of anything start with things like having enough food to eat, being healthy, having a roof over your head and living in a free country.

Change the Bits You Can’t Bear

Identify areas of your life that you are not pleased with and change them – it really is that simple. If you hate your work, start hunting for jobs. If you dream of moving abroad then look at ways to turn your dream into reality. Often, powerlessness is a key cause of unhappiness, if we feel that we are doing something about it, it does not seem so bad.

Think Positive

This one speaks for itself, the glass is always half full not half empty. Remember even the worst possible scenarios can have something positive come from them.

Smile

It sounds really lame, but if you smile and laugh, you generally do feel much happier. It also means that other people will want to be friendly and spend more time with you.

Remember, life is not a rehearsal so wake up every day feeling happy to be alive and live it like it is your last.
